Penn State Spring Recruitment

I have googled, searched, and asked questions but I still have some things I would like to know that have gone unanswered.
First of all, I went through SOME of formal recruitment in the fall but after the first day of open houses developed a giant cold that left me worn out and not feeling my best and due to swine flu worries and suggestions from those running recruitment dropped out after first rounds so I am trying again this spring as I truly thing I would love Greek life, especially since I cam from a tiny high school where we all felt like family.

1. How competitive is Penn State in terms of sorority recruitment? I understand that this is the informal spring recruitment and therefore very different.

2. According to hearsay, although I have tried to email/speak with the Greek life office and have yet to receive a response and from searching this board it seems to be common, spring recruitment is going to be more formalized then it has been in the past and we will have to register and pay a fee. Has this happened at any other schools? It seems as though we are having another formal recruitment although the one sorority that has posted information about spring recruitment parties has an open party listed one day and an invitation only party listed for another. I am horribly confused and just wanted to know if this happened at other school and what I should expect!

ETA: Also, I have a 3.2 GPA and while I know there may be many other girls with 4.0 does anyone know if this is too low to even try to go through the informal recruitment process. The Pan Hellenic website for Penn State states the average GPA of sorority women is a 3.2 but is it still acceptable? (Sorry I realize this has been asked but this is school specific!)

Sorry for the long post and sorry if it seems as though I am clueless! From friends I have in greek life they are just as confused as I am and don't really understand what was going on, and, of course we go back to school and a week later spring recruitment starts!
Thanks so much in advance!
