Ok, so there are 3 sororities: ABC, XYZ, LMN. Quota is 45.
Everybody who goes to ABC's pref party ranks ABC first. Therefore, everyone on ABC's first list matches to ABC.
Susie is #46 on ABC's list (i.e. first on their second bid list) and is on XYZ's first bid list. Since ABC matched quota before getting to Susie, an attempt will be made to match her to her second choice, XYZ. Since she's on their first bid list, she will match to XYZ.
So.... bid matching finishes up. ABC and LMN made quota; XYZ did not. ABC and LMN may therefore take 3 quota additions each. Let's say the women who were #47, 48, 49 on ABC's list (i.e. 2, 3, 4 on their second bid list) were matched to XYZ or LMN. In the quota addition process, Kathy, who's #50 on ABC's list (i.e. 5 on their second bid list) would be matched to ABC.
(Edit: After bid matching and quota additions, XYZ would then be able to snap bid anyone who participated in recruitment but didn't match. So they could snap to quota, thus creating a scenario where all 3 chapters made quota and 2 of them made quota-plus.)
I think this is why the quota range concept came into being.
