It doesn't hurt to get a rec, but know that they aren't typically required in the western states.
This just isn't true. Some western campuses are very competitive, and though recs aren't literally required on ANY campus, to not have recs at some western chapters would mean quick cuts (I'm thinking USC, UW, maybe Arizona too?). Get recs for every chapter you can - better to be safe than sorry.
