i took this to be at least some sense of recognition that a lot of blacks who worked in the white house/early government did not receive. maybe the author didnt mean it in the sense that i got it, or im a sucker for a man losing the love of his life, either way i liked the story!

I have problems with the "I'm black, so I get to define racism." but I understand your point. Disagree, but I understand. I also appreciate your willingness to disagree without personal attacks.
I too found it to be a touching, poignant story. But racist.
