Committed!
If you take away the Greek letters, the color association, and the nicknames; what remains? Is it truly our purpose that interests them? It seems sometimes that prospective pledges are more interested in joining a GLO simply because of its letters, colors, or attractive members. As a member of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, I joined because of its purpose and the commitment displayed by its members to uphold the standards of the Fraternity. Yes, I was tempted by the glamour and popularity of other fraternities on campus but I wanted to feel as though I was "doing" something. As a black man, it's hard to join any organizations other than one of the fraternities represented in the Divine Nine. And having a Nupe for a best friend adds to the pressure. But what I witnessed on my campus was people joining simply because of pressure to fit in. Many pledged GLO's that they didn't know ANYTHING about. But they knew what Greek letters looked like. So I wondered, how many people are joining GLO's for the wrong reasons?
