Committed!
If you take away the Greek letters, the color association, and the nicknames; what remains? Is it truly our purpose that interests them? It seems sometimes that prospective pledges are more interested in joining a GLO simply because of its letters, colors, or attractive members. As a member of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, I joined because of its purpose and the commitment displayed by its members to uphold the standards of the Fraternity. Yes, I was tempted by the glamour and popularity of other fraternities on campus but I wanted to feel as though I was "doing" something. As a black man, it's hard to join any organizations other than one of the fraternities represented in the Divine Nine. And having a Nupe for a best friend adds to the pressure. But what I witnessed on my campus was people joining simply because of pressure to fit in. Many pledged GLO's that they didn't know ANYTHING about. But they knew what Greek letters looked like. So I wondered, how many people are joining GLO's for the wrong reasons?

I think it is shallow to question why people joined what they joined. They did it, accept it, and move on.
Unless you are going to pay their dues, I really would not worry about it. Besides, if all you saw to the D9 was the stepping, letters, and colors, then I would venture to guess that you really did not to your research into each org to find out what we are about. Stepping and such are just a part of who we are. |

if theyre paying their dues and enjoying their time in their org, and dare i say, being a productive asset to the org, then i say, keep on keepin on. |

the point of a fraternity/sorority/social org./whatever is to make college suck less for its members
as a member, your duty is try your best to make college suck less for your brothers (sisters, whatever) and it is their same duty to you everything else is just extra trappings |

yeah. But seriously to the OP you did what you wanted to do (I assume). I hope that you are not one of those people who 'go against the grain' just for the sake of 'being different'....if that is the case....YOU SUCK. If you like your purpose then that is all that matters. |
