Recs from your hometown are ideal. Tell everyone and their mothers that you are going through recruitment in the fall. If you can find one sorority alumna, even if there isn't a chapter of her sorority at your school, there's a good chance that she will know alumnae of other sororities. Plus, some sororities allow collegiate members from other chapters, so if you have any friends in sororities at other schools, they can write you a rec. Good places to start are friends of your family (older brother/sister's friends, mom's friends, dad's friends), high school teachers, coaches, directors, sponsors of activities you participated in, women from your place of worship, women from any jobs you've held or currently hold, women from places you volunteer, etc. The earlier you start looking for sorority alumnae, the better your chances of finding as many as possible.

Once you've exhausted your list of personal contacts, fill in the "holes" with women from your nearest Alumnae Panhellenic. A friend's little sister had a similar dilemma. She is from Maryland (nearest APH is DC) but goes to school in a major Southern city WAY far away from home. I contacted the APH in her school's city, but they said that PNMs should get recs from their hometown APH. I helped her find alumnae for all the chapters at her school, so she didn't have to go to the DC APH for recs, so I'm not sure what you should do. I'd say email someone from the APH in your school's city (and explain that there is no APH near your hometown) and see if you could get recs from them.
