Wooglin's Christmas Song
Wooglin's Christmas Song
Air:- Bonnie Blue Flag (the same tune used for "Wooglin to the Pledge")
Source:- The 1872 Songbook
The night is dark and wild without,
The wind blows fierce and cold;
And eddying snow-flakes softly fall
Down on the frozen mould.
But round our brightly blazing fire,
The moments swiftly fly,
As glad we sing our deep heart love,
For Beta Theta Pi.
CHORUS: Hurrah ! Hurrah!
For Beta Theta Pi,
We'll proudly bear her name through life,
We'll love her till we die.
Old Wooglin's face in cloud enwrapped,
Beams on our happy throng,
A joyous smile enwreathe his lips,
He joins us in our song:
And as the joyful notes go up,
And wake the echoes strong,
We pause awhile in silence deep,
To hear old Wooglin's song.
(CHORUS)
"Another year has gone," he said,
"With all its cares and joys,
And merry Christmas comes again,
To all my Beta boys.
Another winter's chilly blasts
Have flecked my locks with snow,
Yet I'm as joyous, brave and strong,
As thirty years ago."
(CHORUS)
"Alpha, Omega, Lambda, Theta,
How short the time does seem,
The years have wrought a mighty change.
It's almost like a dream.
A little band of eight true souls,
Met round my altar then;
Now thousands proudly claim the name
Of Beta Theta's men."
(CHORUS)
"Knox, Marshall, Linton, Hardin, Smith,
Each one you ought to know,
Duncan and Ryan, Gordon too,
To them your name you owe,
Raise loud hurrahs, a joyous three,
While laurel wreaths you twine,
And ne'er forget the deft you owe,
Those boys of thirty-nine."
(CHORUS)
"Be worthy of the name they gave,
In friendship strong and true,
Base actions scorn with loathing deep,
The noblest paths pursue,
Be pure in life, in virtue strong,
And may the Father's eye,
Watch you that you'll meet again,
A happy band on High."
(CHORUS)
He stops, the clouds are thicker grown,
Yet in the mystic light,
His face beams brightly: then we hear
"God bless you boys, good night."
He's gone, to meet some other Band,
Another joyous throng,
And we take up in chorus deep,
The burden of our song.
FINAL CHORUS
Hurrah! Hurrah! for Beta Theta Pi
We'll proudly bear her name thro' life,
We'll love her 'till we die.
Hurrah! hurrah! for Beta Theta's men
A merry Christmas now we drink,
And hope to do it again.
