It's all well and good to be outraged by this and say "who cares" if somebody convicted of a crime is raped/beaten/whatever in prison. Here's the thing, though -- one day, that guy who was raped/beaten/whatever in prison will be back out on the streets. Do you think that the time spent in prison being raped/beaten/whatever has made him LESS likely to commit crimes and LESS dangerous?

I see what you're saying, but the thing about this case is... this guy is now well aware that he's got a "get out of jail free" card. If he molests another child, what is the judge going to do then? She's already said on record that it's too dangerous for him to be in jail... so what's the next step? I'm not a lawyer but it seems like this guy's defense attorney would be able to argue that jail is cruel and unusual punishment now that the precedent has been set. To me, it just doesn't seem like this current "punishment" is going to make him LESS likely to commit crimes or LESS dangerous either.
