Yea that appears to be the tradition in some of our chapters also. Another one I heard of was tieing the Brother naked to a tree outside the Sorority's house . . . Or throwing him into a standing body of water drunk . . .
In the interest of fun or not, I would have some hurting brothers if they tried that stuff on me.
Mostly it seems more symbolic of leaving the fraternity of bachelorhood rather than the giving of the letters.
