GeorgiaGirl's Rush Story

Since I picked up my recruitment packet from greek life today I thought that I would go ahead and start my story since I know how many people are addicted to this forum and because it's been pretty slow lately.

The packet made me somewhat nervous. The information sheet really doesn't ask for much information about you. Just your contact information really. The thing that really made me nervous was that there is a huge paragraph about how just because you sign up for informal recruitment doesn't mean you'll even be contacted by any groups.

Ok, so here's my background. I came to rush in the fall extremely excited about joining a sorority. I had a terrible experience, not because of the houses or the girls, but for other reasons. I was sick with who knows what which turned into larengitis on the FIRST DAY and lasted for the rest of the week. So here I am, standing in a room trying to talk over 300 girls and I can make almost no sound. It was terrible. I went to the health center and they gave me a prescription that was supposed to bring my voice back but it just dried out my throat and made me cough constantly. I didn't want to ruin someone's skit by coughing all the way through it, so I withdrew from recruitment. I was devistated. This was something that I wanted to do so badly, but I guess it just wasn't the time for me. Now I'm trying again, so wish me luck!

Ok, sorry this is so long, but I have one quick question, too. For fall I had recs to 16/18 houses. I put my name on the COB list so do you think that there is any chance that the houses who knew that they would be participating in spring rush would have kept my recs? I would feel so bad about asking people to write me another one, but UGA is so competative that I need recs. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
GeorgiaGirl

Hi, first of all best of luck with your rush! UGA is a great greek system and I hope you find your home. In response to your question there is a good chance that most houses will not still have your rec from the fall but for spring rush there I wouldn't be so concerned about it. It's quite a bit more casual than fall and less competative. Most groups would not have known in the fall whether or not they were going to rush in the spring, it's all a numbers thing that can depend on how many they got in the fall, how many pledges did not initiate, how many graduate in Dec. etc. to determine if they have spots to fill. Hope that helps.

GeorgiaGirl, a lot will depend on the spin you put on Fall Recruitment. If humor is part of your personality, find a funny way to say that you had laryngitis ("There I stood, surrounded by 300 wonderful women, hearing wonderful stories about their sorority, and all I could do was squeak!") or whatever - you know what I mean.

Look at the sorority women in your classes, and talk with the ones in whose sororities you're interested. Let them know you're getting ready to COB. Publicize yourself!!

Best of luck to you - and may you stay healthy this time around!!

Good Luck

and some advice,
Be very careful about what you post here on this board. I stress this because chances are that people will remember you. Not in a bad way, but they may remember that you couldn't talk, so I'd just be careful posting your likes and dislikes. I love rush threads, but you don't want to hurt your chances for finding a great home. Hope that kinda made sense.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks so much for the advice!

I definitely realize what a small world it is. I gave away my school with the first couple of posts that I made on this site, so that was no secret but I am planning on making my post very discrete. I will not say which houses are participating or which houses I am attending. I probably will not update every day because it is informal rush and someone could figure out which party I went to by which day of the week it was. I will probably just give a general update every few days to let you know if I got any invites and things like that.

Thanks to everyone who has posted for all of their concern and advice. I'm sure that I will be healthy this time around and hopefully I will find my home. UGA has an amazing greek system from what I've seen and I think that I would be happy in most of the houses there.

BTW I never told you the dates so here they are. We have a meeting on Jan 25 and then rush events are Jan 26-Feb 2. We will not be finding out which houses are participating until Jan 25, but as I said before, I will not be posting that on here.

Happy Holidays!

I completely agree with both statements! I think it is VERY important to publicize yourself in informal recruitment because if the girls already know you and have a good relationship with you your chances of getting in increase drastically. Also, it is pretty easy to get to know the girls befoer hand becasue most girls know that recruitment is year round. So don't feel weird striking up a conversation!

you might name your houses after something non identifying...candies, cookies, dessert types, tv shows, musicians. stay far away from flowers, animals and colors.
then you can share, if you want to, and while folks can guess, it's often a tougher connect.
good luck to you.

I turned in my rush form today so technically I could begin activities any time. I am kind of confused, but on the sheet it said that they sororities can contact you as soon as you turn in your sheet, even though the meeting is not until the 25th. I got a bunch of cute new clothes over the break in all different styles since you never know what you'll be invited to. So I think I'm ready. We don't find out which groups are participating until the 25th so once I find out how many there will be then I'll give them some names.
