Nothing like a match between Boca Juniors and River Plate to really get the crowd going - it makes OU-Texas look like child's play!
Or for those who like Brazilian soccer, Flamengo vs. Vasco da Gama. That's good for a riot or two.

I missed this until about 6 pm tonight, when I caught some highlights out of the corner of my eye while walking through the mall. Does anyone know where I can download video of it to see what happened (I am the last person on Earth not to have cable)?

The refs were trying to break up the numerous scuffles between players that erupted when the benches cleared.
Artest was laying on the scorer's table, presumably trying to calm down and keep himself out of the melee on the court.
Security.. now that's a good question. One of the guys who was trying to restrain Artest was a Palace Usher. The Palace has announced that they will be implementing "playoff level" security for the rest of this season (perhaps forever). They have publicly said they are thankful that they have weapons screening in place already, because if somebody had pulled out a knife or gun it would have been truly tragic. Local authorities are watching and re-watching the tapes and intend to file criminal charges against those involved. They did point out, in watching the videos that no Detroit fans threw the first punch in any of incidents. I felt most badly for the ballboy on the court that Artest punched out after he left the stands. The announcers on NBC said repeatedly "Nobody could stop something like this, when this many guys are involved, nobody can stop it".
I think local news has more film coverage than others. One of the sports reporters from our Local 4 was 5 feet from Artest when he leaped off the table and they had camera men around waiting to do interviews after the game who started rolling when the melee broke out. Most are speculating the (in)famous Geoffrey Feiger will probably represent the victims.
Nikki: try Click on Detroit for the film of it.
I'm also going to remind people.. bench clearing brawls have occurred in every sport and many, many people talk about it as if it's "cool" afterward. This was a bench clearing brawl that got totally out of control. A lot of people watch hockey for the fights.

I know if its just in Illinois or MLB but there is a policy of some sort that fans who interfere during a game are arrested and fined some amount. Did the guy who threw the water get arrested or fined?

They didn't identify him until some additional video came out today. He will probably be arrested and if he's a season ticket holder, will lose his tickets. He was the guy in the white hat who grabbed Artest and then threw punches at him from behind when Artest ran up into the stands and started punching out the wrong guy. There is video of that on clickondetroit.com too.

Supposed to be Sports?
Way over paid people for onething while the rest of us peons pay for them to be stupid.
Suspend them, make an example of them.
Hell if was something to do with Greeks, well I guess we can all answer that question!
Do Primadonas sound about right?
Give me College Sports, well until yesterday!
Lots of great dancing, sparing and a few good licks! Suspend them also! College sports is getting more like Pro Sports Daily!

Tom, I get where you're coming from, and I agree that they should be suspended, at least 10 games. And I get that as a professional athlete, cooler heads must prevail.
But c'mon, if someone just chucks you with a water bottle, I know most people would blow up at some of the things that fans SAY to opposing players.
Everyone's at fault here, not the players. But I hope the league doesn't come down too hard on the players and takes the actions of some classless fans into account.

Seriously.....every goal is possible death...
I think the problem is that, these days, many fans don't just pay to WATCH a game....they pay to be PART of it.
See any hardcore football crowd and how they affect the snap count. See Duke basketball.

man, but those soccer fans are nuts..killin players and stuff because they made a mistake. come on now.
american fans have nothing on those loons.

From ESPN.com
It appears the Indiana Pacers will pay a heavy price for Friday's embarrassing melee.
Ron Artest has been suspended for the season, while teammates Stephen Jackson received a 30-game suspension, and Jermaine O'Neal, a 25-game suspension, ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Insider Chad Ford have learned.
"The penalties issued today deal only with one aspect of this incident -- that of player misconduct. The actions of the players involved wildly exceeded the professionalism and self control that should rarely be accepted from NBA players," commissioner David Stern said in a statement Sunday.

Well, he will have plenty of time to promote his rap CD . He deserved this. Hopefully, he'll have time to think about his actions in the past. Maybe, some anger management classes??

Wow...season for Artest, 25 for O'Neal? Seems a bit in excess to me.
Anyone know how the appeal process works in the NBA? I know in MLB that players don't serve the suspension until the process is over, and 99% of the time suspensions are reduced. I could see appeals coming if the NBA is anything like that.
Either way, I see Billy Hunter and the player's union filing grievences ASAP.

The pacers season is totally over - insanity. They ruined the whole year, even for the players who didn't do anything.
I get that artest gets the full season, b/c of his history, but c'mon now, 30 games? Zero for rip hamilton?
It's a 'statement' - but is it the right one?
And kudos to the Palace for prosecuting those who hit the athletes in the same manner the athletes are being investigated - that's good stuff.
