Interesting!!!

About two months ago I was reading the November 2003 edition of Honey magazine and they were talking about lesbianism among black women.

They mentioned the sororities Omicron Psi Omega and Beta Phi Omega-the two black lesbian sororities.

But how can they have a sorority based on sexuality?

With such a small number of black lesbians on college campuses, do they seriously think these organizations will last?

taken from the site...
"Friday, November 17, 1911 marked the founding of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Several years later inspired by the aforementioned, nine women of color: S. Washington, A. Davis, F. Thompson, T. Gates, M. Jones, G. Battles, T. Turner, G. Lee, and R. German pledged their eternal love and devotion to their own organization. Their eternal love, devotion, and deep determination led to the founding of Omicron Psi Omega, Inc. on April 21, 2000 at the George W. Firestone Building in Tallahassee, Florida."

WTH do the bruhs have to with this?

Meezdiscreet, thank you for pointing that out to me, I didn't notcie that!!!

I wanted to email the women of Omicron Psi Omega to get them into this conversation, but they did not have an email address on their site.

The fact that they linked their sorority to the founding of Omega Psi Phi tells me that the founders of the sorority did not know what they were doing.

However, I did enjoy looking at the photos of the women in their sister sorority www.betaphiomega.net

But seriously, Omicron Psi Omega linking their founding to Omegas founding is a bit strange!!!

The “Nine of Clubs” are the nine founders of Omicron Psi Omega, Inc.: S. Washington, A. Davis, F. Thompson, T. Gates, M. Jones, G. Battles, T. Turner, G. Lee, R. German. They are represented by the three-leaf clover with each leaf possessing its own meaning.

In a marriage, the ring is worn on the left hand. To show our everlasting bond with our sister organization, Beta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc., we chose the left leaf of the clover to symbolize that bond.

When under oath or giving your solemn word, it is tradition to raise the right hand. As a result, the right leaf of the clover signifies the vow bestowed upon the members of Men of Distinct. They have our word that we will always be their life-long allies.

The center leaf of the clover is reserved for the Four Men of Honor: Earnest E. Just, Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, Frank Coleman, and every other man who holds the values of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. within their hearts. They are our inspiration!

Sorry pure comedy.
Whats funny is they say the bruhs were founded in 1911 and they were founded a few years later in 2000. Uh thats 89 years..

So basically, if these women had been born male, Omega would have been their fraternity of choice. But since they weren't (at least not physically) they did the next best thing and formed a female version of Omega Psi Phi.......Interesting.

I think a lot of people associate manliness with Omega Psi Phi. They are known for being "real" men (whatever that means). So, it seems that a butch lesbian would associate with this group.

TO me, it's similar to the way that some drag queens claim membership in D9 sororities (I'm sure we've all heard stories of a drag queen skee-weeing or throwing up the pinky)

There are many organizations for lesbians, gays, and bisexuals out there. You would surprised! There is another org Omicron Epsilon Pi who has a list of the other orgs on their site. You can find it at http://www.oepi.com
