I may have to take a quick trip to Salem in a week. Does anyone know much about it--best way to get into town, good places to stay, etc.?

I know a little (very little) but could put you in touch with a few of our Oregon alumnae who might know more, send me an email. Our IH MVP lives not too far from there. I have usually driven through Salem on the way to other places in Oregon.
