When you talk about small campuses that are overwhelmingly Greek (DePauw or W&L are the 2 that spring to mind) often there isn't anything else to do nearby, and the student body is largely affluent and has the $$$ for Greek life. That certainly isn't the case at every small campus. Plus, is it that Greek life is really attractive to all the people that join, or do they feel that if they don't, they won't have a social life?
Yes, you should be utilizing COB to the fullest. If you're not, you will have problems. But there's a difference between using COB to fill your chapter with women you know who would be great sisters and just didn't want to deal with formal rush, and using COB to give anything that walks a bid.
Sometimes women who would be great Greeks, just don't want to be Greek. That's their choice. I'll present the opportunity to them, but I'm not going to nag them and make every encounter with them a mini-rush until they can't stand to be around me. Maybe there are quality people, but if they don't have the money, time or grades, "quality" doesn't mean jack.
I just get really really tired of stating reality being called "making an excuse" by some of these national rush gurus.

I can state that at W&L, the situation is that there is nothing to do in town. With a campus of 35,000, by the very nature of it, you're going to have a lot of entertainment industry spring up to cater to college students. This isn't necessarily so in a small town campus of 1700. Basically, at W&L, if you're non-Greek, you have to work damn hard to have any modicum of social life (particularly as a male).
One problem that does arise on this kind of campus is with COB! A lot of times all the quality, interested people are already taken! So when nationals pushes COB, COB, COB, you are faced with a choice that groups at big schools with a constant supply of potential members never face.

That is exactly the way it is at Morehead. COB is so hard because we are a small campus and by time COB comes around everyone who wanted to rush has already rushed in the fall. Yeah you may have a few girls who are interested ( usually around 15) but you also have six national sororities on campus. it makes it very difficult. i dont think COb is bad but some people just dont always understand it from our view point.
We have a hard time getting girls to rush because they think that the only reason to be in a sorority is is for the frat parties and they can go to the parties whether they are greek or not. Any good ideas for talking them into it. I mean you can tell them how great it is until you are blue in the face but they wont understand until they join........
some sororitieso n campus (no names) used to "trick" girls into coming to rush events.....dirty!!!!

How did this turn into a quality/quantity/problems with COB thread?

Some groups DO take anyone that will sign a bid. I think it's been a while since Dave Westol has seen rush happening and met some of the wabols that participate. If you think bigger always equals better - in caliber of members and more importantly, in the quality of each member's Greek experience - I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Watch it 33girl...you're opening a whole can of worms...if not a discussion thats been beat to death here on Greek Chat.
I personally agree with Westol on a lot of the things he says..including the quantity and quality issue.

I didn't open the can of worms...someone else did. I just petted the little worm and made him feel at home when he crawled out.
But to get back on topic...how about them Boilermakers LOL...and here is a question from ADPiZXalum:

Finally, I've heard that some sororities actually budget a couple thousand dollars to pay for rush fines they plan on getting. Has anyone else heard of this ever? Like they knowingly do things they know will get them fined, but it helps them somehow so they PLAN for it!!! I just thought that was ludicrous.
|
I have heard of this at big schools. It's not against the rules, but it does somewhat violate the spirit of fair play. Hopefully there are no restaurants who work this way.

Speaking as an advisor to the VPFinance it's a good idea to budget for fines. They're going to happen. Either someone turned in something late to Panhellenic or a PNM walks out with a napkin or someone blatantly disregards the rules. It's gonna happen so plan ahead!

Just saw on the Purdue greek web site that they have decided to move recruitment to the fall. Dates are 9/4, 9/6, 9/18, and 9/19... So this time they only have to wait for 2 weeks instead of 2 months. It will be interesting to see if numbers go up...
