Should have stuck with the Program! Some what inlightening but a little biased! Not much though, this is the semi - best PR we as Greeks have gotten in the longest of times!

Ummm, Tom. He said it was the program after "Frat Boys" that he turned off immediately. Apparently, he is a leg man.

Hmmm. That's not my experience. I know that there are some fraternities (like Lambda Chi, and apparently Alpha Sigma Phi) that consider their pledging ceremonies open but private, but most fraternities I am familiar with consider them secret. We certainly do. But perhaps it is more common than I was aware of.

Like AlphaSigOU said, I think that really depends from chapter to chapter.
My boyfriends chapter of Lambda Chi for example, would always invite members of the greek system (small campus - 2 local sororities & 1 other national fraternity) for their associate's ceremony. They would also invite advisors, parents, and girlfriends of the men becoming associates.

It's not a surprize to me that they couldn't repeat it (assuming it wasn't secret). Remember that you undergrads are living the Greek life -- for alums it's not nearly as front and center as it is for you. As for the foundations upon which the organization was built and it's goals and aspirations, that's another matter. I'd like to think we can all remember those.
|
True (although as an alum, I take a little exception to the idea that we shouldn't be expected to remember mottos and other secrets revealed in rituals. But maybe that's jsut me.)
But in any event, Phi Delta Theta has an open motto that appears on its coat-of-arms. According to the Phi Delt website:
The open motto, EiV anhr oudeiV anhr (Eis aner oudeis aner), was adopted in 1880 and means literally, "One man is no man," or more freely interpreted, "We enjoy life by the help and society of others."
Maybe its just me, but it seems like someone might have remembered one of the English translations. "One man is no man" is pretty catchy and easy to remember. A really good open motto, I think.

Guilty.
Re: mottos. Had I not been an alumni volunteer, it could have been thirty-four years or more since I saw a Delt Ritual. I might have remembered the motto -- but there have been a heck of a lot of other things running thru the brain in the mean time.
And hey, some folks have good memories, and some don't.
I would have probably remembered whether I had been involved or not, but my point is that some people just don't think that way.
I still don't know what a Yutch is. Something in Earpspeak? Probably guilty there, too. (chuckle)

I got to see the show this past monday night and I agree there were some parts that are missing, but overall, It gave Greek Life a much better potrayal than MTV did with Fraternity Life and Sorority Life. I'm hoping they do another show in the near future, with more emphasis on the more positive aspects of what Greek Organizations are doing in the community. MTV should take notes on this.

Sigtau,
Unfortunately, a documentary is more of a one time thing usually, as opposed to MTV's "reality" series.
Docs take a whole lot more time, effort, research, writing, etc.
They're also much more expensive to produce due to all of the above.
Maybe if someone gave them a great idea for a follow up?

I think THS should do a mini series on Greek Life. One part focusing on NIC, another on PHC, another on NPHC, another on other cultural GLOs, and yet another on professional/business/educational GLOS.
I don't think you showcase Greek Life in an hour and a half; there's so many different aspects of it that each different "council" does, and to really show what we're ALL about, I guess that would be the only way.

Guys, please remember that this program and topic are things that are important to us. They're probably not of much interest, though, to Fred and Mabel (the average TV viewers). I wish I still had access to overnight numbers (ratings), to see how many people watched.
If I were a programmer, I would be hard pressed to spend a lot more money on a topic that has already aired in this form.
It isn't what you want to hear, but it's reality in a for profit industry.

Dear Fr. Earpberg,
Because the folks at the TV stations take a quick look the next morning, and then file them in the circular file in the corner.
Except for the ones who are heavy into stats and research -- and they make my head hurt.

50s "Frat Boy" observation
negative: 75 bids, 55 pledges, 26 initiates sucks...do they have
positive screening, good mentoring?
Title: Frat Boys is a turnoff for those who loved it all
Blackball usage: cowardly, obsolete, should be gone.
positive: beautiful house, well kept, shows extreme pride
pledge duties not demeaning, positive
dress of members, language, decorum
Kinda brings back what we think Greeks should be. And while the laws have changed, and times are different, there is still a lot
of room for the drinking scholar.
To classy Phi Delta Theta (and good almost everywhere), Sigma
Nu, et al. ya did good
Alums...Ronald Reagan was president of his chapter of TKE at
Eureka, entertained Tekes at White House, visited many TKE &
other houses while president, made two rush films for TKE and
without question, best Greek supporter ever among presidents
Gave many pro-Greek talks. Harry Truman never went to college
but was Lambda Chi Alpha honorary, wimpy Clinton not a Greek, Nixon, Ike, Carter at schools with no greeks. Ike's bro Milt an SAE, Bushes both Dekes, Ford Sigma Chi, do not know
if JFK a Greek, but not as undergrad (JFK, Jr a Phi Psi)
In all a plus...and Phi Delt, you did us all proud...Erik Conard,
