Post Sorority Houses!!!

My school has sorority houses and I was planning on rushing this fall. I know that most schools don't let freshman live in the house because of the seniority rule(which is totally understandable.) I was hoping that I might get a chance to live in it next year, but a few things about it confuse me. How does everyone park their car there? How many sisters to a room? Isn't it a little hectic when everyone is trying to get ready to go out? Can you invite people who aren't in the sorority to spend the night? And if there is a sister who doesn't live in the house but she wants to crash there for a couple nights for whatever reason...is that allowed? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to get this all figured out.

Whoa, slow down a sec....I know college and greek life may sound exciting but trust me, don't worry about all those details, ask the girls in the sorority, they'll know exactly how to answer your questions. I have no idea what school you're attending in the fall, but if it's anything like the rest, parking will always be a bitch. You get to live in your designated chapter house when there is room available. Depending on the size of the room, I believe the number of persons to room would differ. Usually if someone doesn't live there and needs to "crash" at the chapter house, the sister would usually accomodate. Goodluck and relax with your first semester, the years go by faster than you think.

re: houses -

I don't know any sororities that let a new member live in the house, ever. After being initiated, you would be eligible. Traditionally, most of the girls in the house at one time are from one pledge class - maybe it's the soph. or juniors or seniors, varies in each house. Many chapters require officers to live in the house.

re: non-soror. friends sleeping over, parking and crashing at the house --- all variable! different policies at different houses. You'll find everything out as a new member.

Have fun!

p.s. getting ready when going out is soooo much fun. Those are some of my favorite memories (I lived in my house for two years).

Everybody has their bedroom doors open, talking about plans, who's going where, who has which date, gossip, hair dryers going, phones ringing, the intercom buzzing "Kelly/Jen/Whoever, you have a guest in the foyer" (meaning your boyfriend is here to pick you up).... I know it sounds like a B-movie, but it is cheesy and wonderful at the same time. The quietest time in a sorority house is Friday night at 11:00 PM!

The parking situation depends on what school you go to also. Here at LSU all the fraternitiy and sorority members have parking spots near or around their respective houses. In fact I think the greek members have more parking space available then the average student. LOL

Thumbs up

How does everyone park their car there?

20 girls live in the house, and we are allotted 20 parking spaces in the nearby parking garage. and probably not all the girls will even bring a car to school, so we have more than enough space for everyone. fraternities at my school have parking lots by the house, where most if not all brothers in the house can park.

How many sisters to a room?

in my sorority, officers (jrs. or srs.) might have the option for a single room (but they pay more for the priviledge), but nearly everyone is in a double room. you can choose your roommate.

Isn't it a little hectic when everyone is
trying to get ready to go out?

i have yet to live in the house, but i would think it would be so much fun! you would have the greatest clothes and makeup to borrow, and you would get the full scoop on every single party that night! and you would ALWAYS have someone to go out with.....

Can you invite people who aren't in the
sorority to spend the night?

i think we have certain visitation hours, but i believe that a female guest could stay in your room for a couple of nights, provided you told the house mom in advance & your roommate didn't mind. definitely no boys spending the night though.

And if there is a sister who doesn't live in
the house but she wants to crash there for a couple nights for whatever reason...is that allowed?

i'm almost sure this would be fine. she would just need to make arrangements with a friend to sleep on her floor or something. everyone pays to maintain the house, even if they don't live in it, so they have priviledges there. if a sister who lived in the dorms wanted to come over and just randomly watch tv in the living room, she has every right to do that.

I'm finding this very interesting, just to see how other houses operate opposed to our house...

As far as the frosh living in the house, at our house half the house was frosh by the end of spring semester. However, our house started with around 20 members in the fall, so house wasn't even to half capacity.

The parking situation is a pain everywhere. We park on the street and in the lot across from the house, which is designated for "off-campus" students. This means all of us have to be considered living "off-campus", at least to the UPD.

Our rooms can hold between one and three women, depending on which wing the room is in (the addition we added on awhile back has bigger rooms, so more women live in each room).

Although I haven't lived in the house, I've been there to get ready to go out-- let me tell you, it's hectic! But it's not the "get out of my way" hectic, it's the excited hectic where everyone's trying to get ready and talk and make plans at the same time. Getting ready for formals is the most fun, in my opinion.

As far as I know, our house allows people to spend the night that aren't members of the house. We do have one guest room in the basement that is specifically for guests of women who live in the house, but if you had a friend from high school visit for a weekend, usually they can stay in your room. It also depends on the sex of the guest. As far as I know, men are not allowed to stay in the house- even in the guest room.

The house is a popular place to just "crash", particularly on weekends. If you're out with the girls 'til all hours, the comfy blue couches in the basement are the place to be when you get back. It's kind of like staying in a hotel for a night...

Like everyone else has said, each house has their own rules. But I think that most houses are pretty laid back about members (new or initiated) doing what they want, provided the other women in the house are OK with it.
