Sorority Sues After Former Member Leaks Secrets Online

http://m.seattlepi.com/local/article...ed-6241805.php

What do you Greek Chat members think of this? Isn't like acknowledging the information was true and drawing more attention to it?

Remember when the "Voldemorts" made that website with a certain sorority's secrets? There were several lawsuits flying around at the time but I don't remember if the sorority sued them for the site.

Send a message via AIM to DeltaBetaBaby
I'd love to know what kind of damage they think has actually been done.

Makes me wonder how much financial compensation they're seeking. How much money are a sorority's secrets really worth?

Still, it was pretty stupid for the former member to break her oath.

Seems kind of ridiculous. All a lawsuit till do is bring more focus & attention to the breach of secrecy.

ETA: I need to add that I can completely understand PSS ladies being incredibly upset over this. I certainly would be. I just don't know that a lawsuit is the way to handle it.

Note, the fact that Phi Sigma Sigma *did* sue over this makes it proof (at least to wikipedia) that they *are* in fact the secrets.

I've seen several contradictory claims about what the equivalent information is for Alpha Phi Omega, if the fraternity had sued one, that would be proof that it was correct. And the original web location was pretty obscure as opposed the Seattle PI article.

So many complete rituals are now published on line. Fighting this is like trying to fight a raging fire with a teacup of water.

And I think that if our rituals were public, maybe our members would act more in line with what's stated in them. Others would know what we stand for.

Kind of hard to destroy a hotel or sing racist chants then, isn't it?

Unless you're into being a total hypocrite.

(AOII Angel, remember this conversation? I do! It made quite an impression on me obviously).

I completely agree with you, Maria. I remember this conversation well. Having closed rituals does give members a pass to ignore all of the teachings they pledge to uphold.

I disagree.

Our creeds, symphonies, etc. are public; the ritual supports them, and if we are living our (public) creeds THAT would take care of the bad behavior.

Ritual out of context is actually a little silly sounding, given the usual 19th century language and symbolism. Also, important components are usually left out making them read like a heavily redacted Freedom of Information-obtained report. I think the best course of action is to ignore it. As has been noted, when you go to the lengths of suing you are affirming that it is indeed the ritual.

Ritual is just a bunch of words unless it is lived. We should focus our energies on driving home that message, and making sure our members know they are the living embodiment of our creeds.

Not everyone has creeds and symphonies.

Let me clarify then - creeds, symphonies, mission statements, objects, visions, purposes, mottoes, *etc. If I failed to use the specific name your GLO uses to encapsulate what values it expects its members to manifest in their lives, please, be very literal and disregard my obvious intent.

Is there a NPC member with NO public statement of what it expects its members to value? If so, I apologize in 12 different positions. Those GLOs should obviously make their ritual public.

* etc - short for "et cetera". adverb 1.and others; and so forth; and so on (used to indicate that more of the same sort or class might have been mentioned, but for brevity have been omitted):
