Greetings!

Hi, I'm PhotoBug! I'm a 40-year-old female military veteran who got a late start in college (years ago) and had to take some time off along the way due to health issues. I persevered and eventually earned my Bachelor of Science degree in 2000. However, by the time I became a college sophomore and was eligible to pursue membership in an NPHC organization, I was already 27 years old and married. My priorities at the time were on my new marriage and future family, and it didn't help that the school I attended was literally in the middle of nowhere and didn't have any NPHC organizations.

I joined GreekChat to learn about greek life as part of my investigation into whether or not joining a sorority is something that I should pursue at my age. I've pretty much accomplished everything I ever set out to do - except sorority membership. Life happens, and you do what you need to do at the time, and I did. However, now I'm at a point in my life where I think it's the right time for me to revisit sorority membership and investigate my options.

NPHC sororities are really all I have any idea about, but I'm not opposed to joining a non-NPHC sorority or a community sorority. I've even thought about starting one for "late comers" like myself, but I'd much rather join an existing organization.

Besides my interest in greek life, I am a photography buff. You smart people have no doubt figured that out by now being that my username is a dead giveaway. I'm looking forward to having a positive experience on GreekChat, and I hope to never cut any of you (especially the longtime members) the wrong way. I've seen how you deal with people who go wrong, and I don't want that to be me.

My best to all.

Welcome to greekchat! Age is not the big deal you're thinking it is regarding alumnae/graduate membership in NPHC orgs. I've seen women in their 50's and 60's become members at this level. If you are willing to work and have talents and skills to offer, go for it. It's not uncommon at all.

Believe it or not, there are sororities out there that specifically cater to women in their 30s, 40s and up.

Welcome photobug, thank you for your service, and I hope you find a home in greek life. You'll find a few awesome active and veteran military service men and women here, too.

Thank you, preciousjeni. I haven't done any targeted searching for sororities that specifically cater to older women, but I will now. Thanks for the lead.

Yay for the military.

Now onto the basic info:

If you are currently researching sororities you need to do so on your own time using the resources that you are equipped to find without Greekchatters' assistance. Each national website (and alumnae chapter websites) has information that you can use in addition to contact information. I urge you not to come here asking very basic questions like that which you asked in your other thread. Generally, that type of basic information is only directly given to NPHC aspirants via Greekchat PMs or thread posts if we are feeling generous and polite enough to repeat such basic info. Research, establish networks, and use your current networks. Good luck.

Pardon me. I'll leave GreekChat now.

Update:

On second thought, I'm not leaving. I am not yet ready to make contact with local chapters, so I asked my question here. I don't think the question is "basic info", because if it were I'd have found the answer elsewhere. I didn't find the answer, so I posted here. Those who don't want to answer don't have to. But to reply just for the purpose of publically dressing me down, however mildly, is just lame. That said, I got the message and won't publically ask NPHC membership questions anymore, especially since I've been contacted by several NPHC members and told I can PM them when I have questions.

I appreciate the GC members who were "feeling generous and polite enough" to welcome me to GC, including those who also PM'd me and gave me advice without being condescending. I appreciate you all for recognizing that although you have what I want, that doesn't make me any less than you. Thank you for treating me with respect. My most humble thanks to you ladies and gentleman.
