Teke Headquarters was moved from Champaign, IL in order to
obtain more space and to obtain a full-time administrator. The
TKE Executive Sec'y, then, was Vernon J. Hampton, a part-time
Dean at the U of IL. VJ was offered the full time job but did not
want to move or relinquish his U of I position, so Richard R. Hall, a former field man, was given the nod. Alex Barket, a KC
businessman, gave TKE a building at 5000 E. 59th Street in
KC, not far from Starlight Theater. It was far bigger than the so-
called "two car garage," and I began my career with TKE as a field man in that office in August 1957. The headquarters was
moved to Indy about '64 as tax breaks were kind for fraternities and some political maneuvers were involved, too. Bruce B. Melchert succeeded Hall as Executive Secretary and made the
move to Indianapolis from KC. The old HQ reverted to Barket.
He never charged TKE a dime for rent, by the way.
