The Greek Quad At CMU

Today, I was visiting the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. I was cutting across the Greek quad on the north side of the campus, when I noticed that Kappa Kappa Gamma had a house in the quad. I thought that the quad housed Greek men, while Greek women were house on the east side of campus along Margaret Morrison Street. One question: What Happened?

If anyone could enlighten me, I would be most appreciative.

Theta and DG moved from MM to the quad a couple of years ago. Kappa and Tri-Delt moved this year. Alpha Chi Omega and a multicultural women's GLO live in 2 of the 5 MM houses. I have no idea who lives in the remaining 3. The MM houses were really small 3-level townhouses, each only having the capacity to house 16 women via 8 doubles. From what I recall (and it's been decades so I could be wrong), the houses that are on the quad can each house 40 residents. None of the houses in the quad or MM have housemother suites or at least they didn't when I was in school.

In any case, I hope the chapter is somehow able to take our stained glass window to our new residence somehow. This window was designed by an active when the MM houses were built in the late 70s. The glass design is the same size as the front door. The picture below doesn't do it justice....

The houses on the Quad now house 34-36 so each house can have a study areas. The move of Tri-Delta and Kappa happened suddenly this summer when two men's groups were removed from campus. The order of move was determined in early 2006 by a random drawing before our chapter was officially charted. Of course we would hate to see any groups leave campus, but if one does Alpha Chi will be the next group to move over to the Greek Quad.

Delta Tau Delta, Zeta Beta Tau and Sigma Tau Gamma also live at MM. DTD recolonized last year and ZBT has been back for two years. There are also the two multicultural groups at MM.

Recruitment starts in mid sept. I hope that recruitment goes well for all groups!

I'm not sure what house the others took. The DGs took the old DU house after the second time the DU chapter was de-chartered. (In the mid-70s, the DU house did have a housemother suite, but the house has been renovated at least twice since then.) I note several of the fraternities now there weren't there in the mid-70s, so I can't tell which might be gone.

Before the sororities moved to MM street townhouses, they each had a floor in Morewood Gardens. The DGs in 6D, KKG had 3D, DDD had 7C, ChiO had 6C and the Thetas had 5C (I may have mixed up ChiO and Theta). We housed up to 20 per floor there, and the sororities had in the early 70s no more than 20-30 women at a time. I last heard the DG chapter had around 80 now.

alum -- LOVE the window. I do hope it got moved. I hope to go to Homecoming this year, so perhaps I'll be able to find out.

It says on this map that #3 is the Theta house. Back in my day, the Delta Tau Deltas lived in there. According to this map, DU is still where I remember DU residing so it must have been before DG moved over.

#1 was ATO when I was there. #12 is definitely DG.

Beyond that, the campus has changed so much since my last visit that I'd probably get lost now.

I was there in 1986-1990. During this time, the 5 sororities were in MM and twelve fraternities on the quad. I don't remember them all, though I know that ATO and SN were there (I lived in McGill, so I saw the sororities on a daily basis, not the fraternities).

I think in terms of changes for the Fraternities while I was there, they picked up two off campus fraternities during my time there (beyond the 12) and one of the sororities was hurting for numbers relative to the others, (and went under later?).

See the thread above this. Six fraternities have closed within the last decade. Five of the six were the original groups to be housed when the fraternity complex was built. At this rate it may soon be all sorority housing!

What's up is that Kappa took Theta Xi's old house (so they're connected to Kap Sig) and Tri-Delt took KDR's house (so they're connected with Phi Kap). KDR got kicked off at the end of last year for having a member of the house who was an RA have a party in his room with pledges (underage drinking) and Tri-Delt moved onto the quad, because of a decision made in Spring 07. Kappa is bigger than Tri-Delt right now, but it wasn't bigger in 07, I think. Then Theta Xi got kicked off in early August, because the Greek Advisor noticed some of them smoking pot on the roof, and went through the house and just saw all of this risk management stuff. So Kappa moved on the quad, and I think both of their and Tri Delts houses are still being cleaned up.

DTD, which colonized last year and has like 35 guys or something, moved into Tri-Delt's old house. Currently, left to right, it's ZBT--Sig Tau (I think, don't quote me)--DTD--Alpha Chi -- and Kappa's house is being used for isolation for swine flu. Lamba and Alpha Kappa Delta Phi are currently in the back two houses.

It's a big change. I'd actually question whether Alpha Chi would move onto the quad next if numbers/risk moved someone out. I think DTD is currently the biggest group that's off the quad, and it's crazy expensive to move on. Tri Delt and Kappa got a break this year because it was so sudden, but all the houses need at minimum around 32, 34 people living in them to make it profitable (and thats with quads as doubles, etc.) Hopefully no one else will do anything stupid, though!
