LOL.

Nothing surprises me at all with kids anymore.

I went into my GYN's office for an appt and sat next to a pregnant 13 year old.

It was so ridiculous because here she is like 8 months pregnant and she really is JUST a kid. I mean, she called her mom "Mommy" still.

I remember her trying to fill out the paperwork and such and having her mom fill it out because she "didn't know how." She had to ask, "Mommy, am I allergic to anything??"

I kept thinking, wow, she has no clue what she's gotten herself into.

other than the fact that the father looks so young...I don't see the big deal about why this made international news.

Seriously, spend some time with the OB/GYN's at any hospital that deals with the underserved and you're going to see a lot of this. I've personally done pre-natal visits for 13 year olds. Several of the pediatric residency programs I'm looking at have special "teen mother" clinics run jointly by OB/GYN's and specialists in Adolescent medicine.

But girls mature physically before boys, generally, and look like they have matured some. The average age of menarche in the US is 12. Once that's happening, a girl can obviously get pregnant. My son is 12 and most of his friends are just now starting to grow underarm hair, have some voice changes, etc. Some of them look much older than this kid does, some of them look like that kid. The ones who look older (starting to get the peach fuzz moustache, etc), I would expect them to be fertile. I wouldn't necessarily expect the younger looking ones to be fertile yet.

I think that's it, along with the fact that there are several other "young lads" who have come forward saying that the kid is theirs. Add the grandfather in the devil mask and you have a lot of WTF.

The photos make me laugh. It looks sooo posed and dramatic! She looks like a giant compared to him, too.

Actually, and I'm taking this beyond what AGDee was saying, it does. If you ever watch the TV shows about the biology of sexual attraction that PBS or whatever have (yep, I'm a nerd), a lot of what is considered typically beautiful over time is associated with fertility: waist hip ratio, symmetry of features, youth generally, but obviously not as much as the topic of this thread.

It sounds like Octomom should have moved to Britain, and then she wouldn't have to worry about housing.

This may be what's different about teen motherhood these days. I think it's always been around, but that in the past there was as assumption that if a person was pregnant that she needed to mature fast enough to take on a maternal role OR plan on giving the baby up to be raised by someone else.

And now, in a lot of the families where a teenage girl gets pregnant, the teenagers stays in her child role but the family also keeps the kid around.

The only reason why I'd judge it as being worse is that it seems often to completely cut fathers out of the loop. In this case in Britain it makes sense if the dad is this young, but not in cases when the parents are a little older.

This case is a national shame. There is a large underclass of people in the UK, poorly educated with little prospects who are the root of many social ills. Teen pregnancies, drunken violence, anti social behaviour, and sadly increasingly knife and even gun crime. (Over 20 shooting/knifing deaths in London last year alone).

I am a liberal guy but feel the UK faces social collapse. Strict state control is required to make use of what are in essence, pretty useless people.

How does one find a hoodie with a middle finger on the back?
