This is the second time you've mentioned something in the Washington Post being irrelevant. Need I remind you that both events you mentioned occurred in Washington and are, at the very least, of interest and importance to Washingtonians?

It is our paper, after all.

There are lots of murders in D.C. I can see this being at the most a national interest story which might go for a news cycle. Lots of kids go to D.C. for intern jobs, etc., but this is complete overkill.

Besides the unwarranted Condit speculation, I don't see the big deal.

How is it overkill? 6 years have passed since her body was found, and it was over seven years ago that she disappeared. It's not totally unusual for a newspaper to go back and write an article about an unsolved case that shook its respective city. My teeny tiny hometown does it every so often, especially when the case involved a young female who was killed. I'm sure in 5 years or so, the Birmingham paper will probably do something similar with Natalee Holloway.

Investigating the Natalee Holloway case involves an all-expense paid trip to Aruba for all "investigative reporters" involved. You can bet that case will merit lots of follow-up.

I do think that it's a shame that we're not equally as interested in the fates of all murder victims and instead seem a whole lot more interested in young, white, female victims. But it's apparently what people watch and read in terms of news stories, so it's not surprising that these are the stories that reporters bring back.

There was recently a decision by the Georgia Supreme Court that any murder investigation labeled as an open case was not subject to the Open Records Act. The Athens paper brought the suit because they wanted access to the police records of a murder of a student that took place when I was in school there. On some level, it's good that the paper would keep pressure on solving the case; on a different level, there are many other unsolved murders in Athens, and yet, not all get this kind of attention or apparently any attention at all.

ETA: the article only list 6 unsolved murders since 2001. But I doubt that all murders before 2001 were solved, and I know of at least one other case (from the 1990s) for which no one was ever prosecuted for the murder. I think the Athens police rates for solving crimes are generally pretty good. I'm just pointing on the difference in attention to cases depended on who the victims are.

Who pissed in your Cheerios this morning?

I hope this series on Chandra Levy's murder renews interest in her murder and her killer is brought to justice.

How many murders happen in D.C. which don't get national attention?

If we don't care about those, why should we care about this one?

Cold cases get attention all the time in the Washington Post.
