Like many people in sports TV, I met Bobby once.
Like many people in sports TV, I can't repeat what was said in public.

Hmm. I met him once and he was nice (I was 10 or 11). Then again, I was at the children's hospital so I can't imagine him being there and yelling at the kids! He asked if I played basketball, I said no I play volleyball. He asked if I worked hard during practices, I said yes, he said good, that's the only way to improve.

When I found out what happened to that student he assaulted, I thought it was ridiculous a kid had to switch colleges because he was getting death threats from morons who thought the kid had gotten Bobby Knight fired.
But that is just morons being morons- not Knight's fault.
As for his antics on the court- his employers and the organizations that control college basketball let him get away with it. So if they were okay with it, who am I to complain. I can watch or tune out.
But Knight also had the reputation for being fanatical about keeping his players up with their academics, and it is said in many circles he fought hard against changes in game times and other alterations that were made to college programs to enable turning college basketball into the big money mess it is today. He saw what was coming and fought hard against it.
That changes things for me, and I have to respect the guy. I also like how he went out. He just worked his ass off until he, for whatever reason, knew he could not do it anymore- and then he quietly left the court, so to speak, without any fanfare or big retirement speeches etc.
I have to respect someone like that.

Right...and if he had a player that was MORE POPULAR with the press/student body/administration/people in general than he was, he made that player's life a living hell.
He could NOT stand to share the spotlight with anyone....
Just ask Steve Alford, or Damon Bailey for starters....
Bobby Knight treated everyone around him as if they were beneath him....bleh!

anyone care to hear what a red raider has to say?
well too bad... here it is anyways....
Bobby Knight is a legend. He helped bring Texas Tech into the spotlight. There are so many articles in national newspapers about how he helped Tech. Along with the good, there is always going to be bad. He is well known for his fierce temper. Not a good thing. But he also made his players focus on education. In all his years of coaching, only 4 of his players didn't complete a degree. He helped turn our mediocre basketball team into one that is good.... was good.....
While we won't miss his angry reactions, most everyone here was sad to see him go.
I do respect him for not making a big deal about leaving. The man was tired of coaching... he didn't want to do it anymore.
sorry this post is long... i just needed to rant about this with someone not from tech.... which is hard for me..... at least when classes are in session
