A tavern in your town.

I'm not asking how wasted you get, but near your school or neighborhood is there a place ala Cheers where everybody knows your name, or where you feel you can just kick back?

Both of my favorities have been torn down.

Just thought it would a nice timeout from recruitment talk.

I used to work at a bar while I was in college. I quit about 3 years ago, but I still frequent the place after work, whether it be to have dinner or have a few beers before I head home. I'm totally fine going there by myself because I know I'll run into one of my friends. I trained all the bartenders and waitresses at some point, so if my drinks/food aren't free, they're heavily discounted.

Magoo's Pizza's on University (back in the 80s, once owned by the family of one of my Georgia Alpha Gam sisters who used to post here on GC) had 100+ beers on tap and was a sorority favorite enjoyed by many from my chapter. They recently closed, but will reopen later on this month with the same staff, just with a different name. Over the years we've dated bouncers and bartenders and after a while there's no such thing as waiting in line to get in and having to show your ID. You can't go wrong with 75 cent drafts.

ETA: To the OP, thank you for reminding us that there IS life outside Fall Recruitment.

No, but I suspect they'll be building one shortly.

Back in undergrad, there was a Bennigan's across the street from campus. They were great about not checking ID's.

They're out of business now.

There is none now, because I don't drink much outside of home, but there used to be...

Probably my favorite was O'Halloran's Tipperary Pub in Detroit. It was a place where a lot of TV folks and a lot of cops hung out.

Strange mix of people.

Tommy O'Halloran used to lock the doors at closing time -- but would often go on serving his friends.

You couldn't get into the place on St. Pats day. Literally.

At UGA, Boar's Head Lounge was that place for me. That is the only bar I ever really looked forward to going to- and we knew everybody there.

The usual game plan was to drink beer and 7&7s while eating stale popcorn- and then at closing time go to someone's apartment, order a pizza and then drink beer and play poker until sometime Sunday morning.

Actually, I didn't think about college, but I had a place in Columbus and a couple of places in Athens (Ohio, not Georgia).

Columbus was the Bier Stube and either The Union or The Tavern in Athens.

At the University of Oregon we've got Rennie's Landing. It's a mainstay on campus. I cringe when I think how much money I've poured into that place over the years...

There is a place in Augusta called Helga's Lounge where my sister's best friend bartends...and it's becoming that bar for me.

In Athens, it was Copper Creek.

Used to go to Hoops after I left the liquor store!

Boy talk about everybody knowing each other!

One New Years Eve, Margret had a late date, she closed the place and five us and she just drank free!

Still there, but drive by, time and the people who go there have changed!

The Tombs

The Tombs in Georgetown. I have other places where I like to go, but that's the place where they're always glad I came.

In college (Ohio University) it was The Pub. When I was home from school (Columbus) it was the Blue Danube. In Evansville, it was Sportsman's. Now I'm in Indy with kids, so it is usually my neighbor's house, around the pool! (no fear of drinking and driving)

I was in Columbia, SC last week and we went out to Yesterday's Tavern and Restaurant in Five Points. It made me think of this thread. I was definitely impressed!

Also, if you're ever in Augusta, you should stop by Helga's Pub and Grille on Central Avenue and let me pour you a beer! We have the widest selection of draft beer in the CSRA and the best bar food in town, by far. (Not spam--I'm just representing here. Ha.)
