Unhappy would you call me a traitor?

Hi GC.com!
Okay so heres the deal i was wait listed to my #1 choice for college last year.. so last minute i decide to go to a small rural college about 3 and a half hours away from my house. It was pretty hard to adjust from big city to small town and wasn't feeling to sure that i made the right choice of going to this college blah blah don't want to go into details haha but my main point is that spring (which was of january 2007) i pledge to a sorority to be involved, make friends, and just because i love what sisterhood meant to them. anyways so around March my parents told me to re apply to the college that i was waitlisted at (A&M in college station if anyone was curious)... So i did reapply.. pretty sure since i didn't get in the first time i probably wouldn't this time But i ended up getting accepted yay! but the only thing holding be cause is that they didn;t have my sorority there. so i explained to the exec board telling them that i did not want to be initiated knowing i was not going to stay there and also i already knew that once i was initiated i could never pledge to another sorority (which makes sense) They were all understanding because of course intiation fees are alot! (and not worth it since i was not going to stay)
Okay so i ended up not getting intiated and plan to go to my #1 choice college in the fall
My question is once school starts would there be any hard feelings or trouble if i pledge to another sorority and get initiated? I mean i don't know if i would want to since i'm not at the campus but i'm just saying for the future if i feel the desire to. I saw a post asking this question but i was wondering how they would react.

I would be honest to the sorority i would want to be in and explain to them my situation and hope they understand and accept me/give me a bid.

But i'm worried my old sorority would think i'm betraying them.
The future/maybe sorority would know that i pledge to another because i would tell them but my old one would of course find out through facebook and mutual friends.

QUESTION:would my old sorority think of me as a traitor?

sorry for the life story this has been on my mind since summer started. Anyways any experience/advice/opinions?

Well I don't see how you could "betray" your old sorority seeing as you've never been a member of a sorority (i.e. initiated).

I've had Sigma Nu depledges join other houses. It's amusing more than anything...

If you're going to A&M for sure then just count your blessings that you didn't get intiated and get a chance to experience greek life at your new school. Lots of people don't get that opportunity when they transfer.

No, I don't think so. You were up front about your reasons when you depledged. You would have stuck with it if your group had a chapter at A & M. I don't blame you for pulling out. May the rest of your college life be sunny!

Don't even mention your past experience. How would they know?

You are not doing anything wrong.

An honest, well-taught new member! Congratulations!

Bottom line: Your friends will be happy that you found your sorority home, at the college of your choice. Your non-friends will not be so happy. There's a song from the WWII era, Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative, Don't Mess with Mr. In-Between. It sounds as if you've already figured that out - congratulations and hope you get the bid you want!

PS: A recruitment thread would thrill a LOT of us!

Well said all.

You were honest and up front and you are now free and clear in every sense to rush at A&M.

Good luck to you.

the a & m sororities will not know that you pledged a sorority at your former school if you do not tell them. even if it comes up in conversation, saying something to the effect of "well, a & m was my first choice, but i was waitlisted. i enrolled at rural u. and tried to make the best of things. i did participate in recruitment, pledged a sorority there, and at the same time re-applied to a & m-this time i was accepted. i realized that a & m did not have a chapter of the sorority i pledged, so i resigned my membership before i was initiated. they were a great group of girls and i hope to find the same kind of sisterhood here at a & m."

a & m has recruitment in the fall, and i would imagine that most of the sororities make quota and are not able to recruit members until the next year, so if you want a chance to join, you should enroll in recruitment this summer. be sure to line up recommendations for as many of the sororities as you can. enjoy your time at your #1 school!

Congrats to you on A&M and kudos to you on having the maturity to do your homework and realize that initation=forever. I think you made a smart choice not to be initiated and it will not hurt you to have been a sorority new member. You may be required to disclose that you were a pledge of a sorority on your recruitment app (if it was an NPC chapter), but otherwise, it really doesn't matter. You were never initiated.

Good luck at A&M and at recruitment!

Applause for doing the RIGHT thing and not getting initiated when you knew you weren't staying.

Good luck in finding a sisterhood at A & M. I hope you get your first choice there as well.

Like everyone above already said, You made the right decision by not initiating if you knew you would be transfering schools, etc.

I pledged an NPC and then depledged, and then I went to my local, the NPC group wanted me to come back, but I knew it wasn't for me. Because I hadn't initiated, I was free to go where I wanted (after the one year period).
Good luck to you!!!!

Thumbs up Way to Go!

I applaud you for thinking ahead and being honest with the organization you were pledging.

There should be no bad blood between you and any other national organization and as others have said, there is no reason to mention your past involvement. You were not initiated and therefore are not a sister. Joining another panhellenic organization is not a betrayal of any kind.

MAJOR KUDOS TO YOU!!! You were honest and upfront. I am so glad new members are beginning to understand the commitment involved in sisterhood!

I'm sure you'll find sisterhood where ever you go!

If you go through formal recruitment, keep us here at GC posted. We're all behind you!!!

AND, CONGRATS ON ACCEPTANCE TO YOUR TOP CHOICE SCHOOL!!!

Why do You think You are a Traitor?

You were only a Pledge of a GLO and You had to move on!

So, there was no GLO that you Pledged and that is a Problem now?

What You must realize, that there and so many Fine GLOs with such great members that you can look at and belong to!

Just look at some of the Great GCers here! Others, just ignore!

not that i think you made the wrong decision at all, but have you considered looking into expanding the first sorority onto your new campus? it sounds like you were very happy with your experience so far and it's always worth a try to see if they're interested in expansion.

Texas A & M isn't open for expansion at the present time and even if it was, NPC expansion is a very long and difficult process. She would probably be graduated before the chapter even chartered.
