Age of consent in Canada

"In addition to derailing Liberal measures to loosen marijuana and prostitution laws, Mr. Harper has introduced tougher crime legislation, bolstered the military with new money and equipment, lowered the national sales tax and plans to raise the age of sexual consent to 16 from 14."

You gotta be joking. You're allowed to pork 14 year olds up there?

As long as you aren't in a position of authority or responsiblity for said 'minor' then yeah... so for example it is perfectly legal for an 18 year old and a 14 year old to have a sexual relationship with out said 18 year old being labeled a sex-offender or peadophile.

You don't possess a sense of humour anyway so that would be lost on you.

This is exactly why we have issues....in Ontario, you can have sex at 14, but you can't get married until you're 16 (and even then, you need permission from parents/guardians or from the court if guardians can't be found...you have to be 18 to marry without permission)....and considering that these laws are really old.....

So basically a 45 year old man can molest a 14 year old girl and it's OK if he's not her dad? You guys seriously don't see anything wrong with this?

Molest - no, that'd be sexual assault ... as for sex, well...

The courts have very "loose" definitions of what constitutes authority - and the courts would almost always decide against said 45 year old (male or female). If past cases are any indication, the courts would decide that a 45 year would hold a "de-facto" position of authority simply because of age, and legal charges of sexual assault or sexual exploitation would be pressed.

The ironic part of these laws is how many on the right scream about them corrupting the morals of the youth... when in fact it was the Tories who enacted them under pressure from the more "conservative" Christian sects - along with a law that has since been repealed stating that a 14 year could get married with parental permission or she/he was expecting (and some still do after issuing legal challenges to prove their emotional maturity).

I keep having a mental image of the Simpsons-esque screams "won't somebody think of the children" that usually accompy the protests... by protestors who seem to operate under the assumption that 14 years aren't mature enough to think about sex, much less have it.

PS> Oh and KSig RC the usual phrase commonly thrown about is "Grass on the field - Play Ball" (or at least it was when I was in Highschool).

just because the age of consent is 14 doesn't mean that statautory (sp?) rape doesn't still apply in some of these situations - there are states here in the US with ages of consent that young

Yeah how foolish for me to think that 14 year olds aren't mature enough to think about sex.

As for the weird religious marriage thing, that only happens with hicks in America, in weird states nobody cares for (ie anything outside of ny and ca), or developing countries. I didn't realize you guys had a national law that allows people to pork 14 year olds. I hear the strip clubs are good too.

I think part of the issue is also how the Canadian legal system defines "sex" - for example Bill Clinton most certainly had sex according Canadian laws... Sex doesn't only mean intercourse, it includes any sort of sexual contact or congress. Of course there is still some controversy over the fact that the age of consent for sodomy/anal-sex is still 18.

We have our hicks and "mountain-folk" too... but really the majority of cults/sects that defend this right are from good'ol Alberta (we like to keep our religious nuts and fundies in one province).

Yes our strip clubs are good... the strippers can well strip - and of course the booze can flow like expensive water as well in stripclubs. In fact a new trend is the members-only "hedonism clubs" where anyone and everyone seems to stip, with fetish nights and/or swingers nights usually once a week.
