Grown & Sexy

It's an awkward time for singer-actor Marques Houston. The former Immature and IMx front man is readying the release of his third solo album, 'Veteran,' on Nov. 14, but he's at a stage in his career where his music is too mature for the kids and adults aren't quite sure if they're ready to embrace him. "It's a very tricky time for me," Houston told me while we chatted at The Ultimate Group offices in Woodland Hills, Calif. last week. "I've gone through that and pretty much my entire solo career it's been that way. The last album, 'Naked,' helped little bit. It started people saying, 'Okay, you know, we might be able to get with him now.' They still weren't all the way sure. They are still a little bit skeptical about it."

Coming out of a group called Immature and being on the bubblegum teen series 'Sister Sister,' has made the transition into grown-up musician an uphill battle for Houston. "You got 'Sister Sister' still running and I was like 15 or 16 when I ended it. I started that when I was 12. That kind of confuses you because they run it on Disney like it's a new show. So people don't really know how old I am. I am 25. Most people don't know that. They still think I'm 19 or 20," he explained, before adding: "I think B2K was such a big group and I was with them a lot, people automatically thought I was like in the group or put me in the same age bracket."

Now that he's embracing his new 'grown and sexy' image, does that mean Houston has done his last 'Scream Tour?' "Yeah! Yep," he said emphatically. The Los Angeles-bred entertainer said this album shows his growth as an artist and as an adult. "This album is a reflection of me as a man, as apposed to the 'Naked' album. [With that one] I was trying to say, 'Hey everybody, I'm grown up now!' On the first album it was like, 'Hey everybody, I'm a solo artist now! No more Immature! No more IMx!' I had points to prove on the first two albums but this one I am just going to let the music speak for itself. I think now, its just like I want the music to speak for itself. I think the adult crowd, once they hear it and once they see me and stuff like that, and they get to feel me on this new album and hear the things I am talking about, I think they'll kind of accept it," he said.

Though Houston told me that 'Veteran' is "more personal," the singer wasn't keen on me asking him a few personal questions about his dating life. Though he confessed that he is dating a notable woman, who is in the industry, he wouldn't share who. (Though you know it's only a matter of time before I find out!) In addition, Houston was tight-lipped when I asked about him having previously dated Beyonce Knowles and Brandy.

"Let's not talk about who I dated," he said. "I just don't like to talk about that. I got my reasons I don't like to talk about that."

One thing we did talk about however were the rumors that the 'You Got Served' star was posing for Playgirl magazine. Around the time of 'Naked's' release an online report surfaced saying that Houston had been offered $1 million to pose for a Playgirl pictorial. The glossy denied the report, claiming Houston's camp was exploiting the mag for cheap publicity, and then challenged him to put up or shut up. Houston says the whole thing was taken out of context.

"It did get blown out of proportion," he admitted. "Somebody came to me and asked me would I do Playgirl. It was a joke, but I was like, 'If the money was right. If they paid me a million dollars.' So that was how the how thing started. It's what people do."

And if Playgirl offered him $1 million would he consider posing now? "No. Not at all," he closed.

Rumor Control

Don't start buying a wedding gift just yet, because singer Chico DeBarge told me that he is not marrying actress Nona Gaye. I got a call from the soul crooner last week and he told me that despite having dated the 'Crash' star for more than a year, the two are no longer an item.

"There are these rumors that we are getting married and that's not true," DeBarge confessed. "That's not true at all."

In addition to an upcoming album, DeBarge is working on a book of poetry that he plans to release next year. Gaye was recently cast on the NBC series 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' but abruptly left the series. She was replaced with actress Theresa Randle ('Bad Boys').

'Extra!'s' New York correspondent Tanicka Ray just got a promotion. The perky, wild-haired TV talent was just named co-host of 'Extra!'s' weekend edition. Ray previously hosted 'Head 2 Toe' on the Lifetime network and before becoming a TV talent danced for artists like Will Smith and Brandy. The Washington, D.C.-bred, Los Angeles-raised Ray is also a contender for Star Jones Reynolds vacated seat on 'The View.'

Vivica A. Fox, Lou Gossett Jr., Loretta Devine and singer Mya will star in a film called 'Cover,' which is being helmed by director Bill Duke. The movie tackles the AIDS epidemic in the black community.

Though there's no word on when the accompanying TV special that was shot this past January and produced by David Gest (Liza Minnelli's eccentric ex) will air, Dionne Warwick's 45th anniversary album 'My Friends & Me' will be released in the coming months on the jazz label Concord Records. The set will feature the legendary vocalist collaborating with the likes of Gladys Knight, Kelis, Cyndi Lauper, Angie Stone, the late Celia Cruz, Deborah Cox, Wynonna Judd, Chante Moore, Reba McEntire, Mya, Gloria Estefan, rapper Da Brat, Olivia Newton John and 'American Idol' finalist Lisa Tucker.

Though last week he had the number one single at Urban Adult Contemporary radio with his song "Find Myself In You" off the 'Madea's Family Reunion' soundtrack on his former label Motown Records, singer Brian McKnight is now competing against himself with a new single "Used To Be My Girl" shooting up the charts. After a not-so-amicable parting with Motown Records, McKnight is now signed to Warner Bros. Records and his new album, '10,' is slated to drop Nov. 14.

Three veteran crooners are partnering for a new R&B venture. Former Silk singer Gary "Lil' G" Jenkins, former AZ Yet vocalist Marc Nelson and former Blackstreet belter Mark Middleton are combining their efforts to form a new R&B group rumored to be called Blaze. So far, there's no record company affiliation but the group is shopping for a deal.

Singer Big Bub formerly of the R&B group Today is readying the release of his comeback album, 'Tug of War.' The CD is being released via the Drake Web Music Group, but doesn't have a firm release date.

Sources tell me that an on-the-rise Hollywood actor lost his expensive diamond studs last week at a party in Los Angeles when a notorious Hollywood vixen smacked him and they popped out. Said actor kept asking the headline-grabbing sex kitten "why haven't you called me?" before actually groping one of her breasts in front of a group of partygoers. 'Cleopatra Jones' actress dead

BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- Tamara Dobson, the tall, stunning model-turned-actress who portrayed a strong female role as Cleopatra Jones in two "blaxploitation" films, has died.

Dobson, 59, died Monday of complications from pneumonia and multiple sclerosis at the Keswick Multi-Care Center, where she had lived for the past two years, her publicist said.

At 6 feet, 2 inches tall, Dobson was striking as the kung-fu fighting government agent Cleopatra Jones in 1973. She reprised the role in 1975's "Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold."

"She was not afraid to start a trend," said her brother, Peter Dobson, of Houston. "She designed a lot of the clothing that so many women emulated."

Dobson also appeared in "Come Back, Charleston Blue," "Norman, Is That You?" "Murder at the World Series" and "Chained Heat."

She had TV roles in the early 1980s in "Jason of Star Command" and "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century."

Dobson lived most of her adult life in New York, her family said. She was diagnosed six years ago with multiple sclerosis.

I dont think either one of those women is Alicias "girl", but the Under Ground buzz mentioned that the singer was vacationing in Italy, and there just so happen to be recent pictures of Alicia vacationing in Italy. Yeah, I am aware that her mom is white.
