Pssst - unless you saw Willie in the early 1970's or before, he wasn't drunk.

eta: Voted again!

I'm a little surprised that I love NY wasn't nominated for neither the slogan nor the logo categories.

Was this in the 70's? Willie Nelson doesn't drink anymore....he smokes pot. I have spent alot of time with him down in Austin at his studio (one of my good friends here at UT is an intern there). It is widely known that neither Willie nor Jerry Jeff drink.

Sorry - I had to vote for "Give a Hoot. Don't pollute!"
I think most New Yorkers wouldn't even notice a plaque.

I also like the slogan "Give a Hoot. Don't pollute."

That's really the truth. They wouldn't waste the time spitting.

Plus, Don't Mess With Texas sounds like a state pride thing, not even really a touristy thing. Viva las Tejas would look better on bumper sticker anyway. That way Oklahomans (Oklahites? Oklahomers?) could not cut them.
Oklahomans is correct, and it's not only Oklahomans that do that. I've seen the amended bumper stickers on cars with plates from California and even Alaska, among others.

However, Oklahoma used "Don't lay that trash on Oklahoma" which has to be the stupidest anti-litter campaign EVER.

My favorite sign in Oklahoma was driving past the state penitentiary -- "Hitch hikers may be escaped convicts."

Don't Mess with Texas Wins By A Landslide!
TxDOT slogan voted America's favorite

(AUSTIN, Texas)-Don't Mess with Texas is being honored today as America's favorite slogan with a parade down New York City's Madison Avenue ending in Times Square.

Thanks to the support of Texans and others who love the Lone Star State, the Texas Department of Transportation's Don't Mess with Texas litter prevention slogan won Advertising Week's 2006 Walk of Fame contest. Don't Mess with Texas beat out 25 other well-known slogans including “JUST DO IT.” by Nike, the California Milk Processors Board's "Got Milk?” and "Have it your way" by Burger King. TxDOT's slogan won in a landslide, with more than 400,000 votes.

“We knew we had a great slogan, and we knew we could generate the support of thousands of Texans,” said Doris Howdeshell, Travel Division Director for TxDOT. “We just never thought we'd win by such a high margin against such high profile competition.”

The Don't Mess with Texas votes are the result of a viral marketing campaign that leveraged Texas pride and piggybacked the campaign's 20th anniversary promotions. From June 20 through midnight yesterday, people were encouraged to cast a vote at www.VoteDMWT.com and select Don't Mess with Texas as their favorite slogan. Viral e-mails circulated to thousands of people rallying friends, families and colleagues to vote online. Also, several companies were recruited to encourage their employees to vote.

America's Favorite Slogan
The national contest is part of the third annual Advertising Week Walk of Fame. Advertising Week is North America's largest annual gathering of advertising and media industry decision makers.
Don't Mess with Texas victory banners will line New York's Madison Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, and the slogan will receive permanent recognition in the Advertising Icon Museum in Kansas City, which opens spring 2008. Last year's winner was General Electric's slogan, “imagination at work.”

Don't Mess with Texas' Legendary History
TxDOT launched the "Don't Mess with Texas" campaign in 1986 to curb roadside litter pickup costs. The now-famous slogan was created by Austin-based GSD&M advertising agency, which helped establish Don't Mess with Texas as the nation's most successful litter prevention campaign in the country. GSD&M handled the TxDOT business until relinquishing the account in 1998. Austin-based Tuerff-Davis EnviroMedia Inc. has since worked with TxDOT to generate further success, including the most recently measured drop in roadside litter - 33 percent since 2001.

This year, Don't Mess with Texas kicked off its 20th anniversary with new TV advertisements featuring some of the biggest celebrities from Texas including Matthew McConaughey, Owen Wilson, Lee Ann Womack, Lance Armstrong and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
