That seems to be about the age that MOST girls stop being interested in it. For all you people who ARE familiar with what GSUSA is doing today, are they doing anything to hold girls interest once they hit middle school?

I was told that it was moved to the mod's corner. Maybe it was deleted since then.

I am amazed that you want to insult people about something when you did not even READ THE POSTS. The posts that have been about the GS have been about our own individual experiences with GSUSA.
I didn't realize that my childhood was a myth I think I might need some therapy on that issue

How closely aligned is GS with religion?
The "Girl Scout Promise" mentions God, but this disclaimer appears on the website:
* The word "God" can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one's spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word "God" with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate.
That seems nice and inclusive, but how does it work in practice?

I quit Girl Scouts when I was in 5th grade because of a rift with the leaders' daughter (1976). I re-joined in high school because of the awesome trip a friend of mine had gone on to the Canadian Rockies, backpacking, canoeing, Calgary Stampede, fun times. The trip I ended up going on was to Maine, New Hampshire and New York. We planned the trip ourselves and just had parents to drive us around. We went backpacking, hiking, white water rafting, canoeing and took technical climbing lessons. It was the best trip of my life.
My daughter is now in 6th grade and is a Cadette. Her leader is a 25 year old woman who has a toddler. This woman had made some poor choices in her middle school years and was kicked out of Girl Scouts by her leader because she was straying to "the dark side". She feels it is important for these young women to stay involved, have goals, gain self esteem and make positive choices for themselves. She is awesome with the girls. The girls totally run their meetings, collect their dues, take turns planning the meeting's topic. Therefore, they do what interests them.
They had an overnighter and did work on their sewing badge in the process. The activity? Making some very cute destructed jeans with rhinestones, patches, bleach pens, etc. They all wore them to school on the same day (but didn't dare tell people they made them in Girl Scouts). This same group of girls also just planned a whole encampment weekend for 75 girls. They planned the menu, chose the workshops, etc. The workshops they picked DO include some traditional things such as hula dancing (it's a Hawaiian theme weekend) and a cookie decorating contest, but they also have workshops in self defense, a high ropes course, a low ropes course, and horseback riding. Something for every interest really. Additionally, they did all the meal planning and stayed in theme. They designed the t-shirt and the patch for the weekend. I sat through these planning meetings while waiting for my daughter and kept thinking "These are going to be great sorority women". Planning recruitment, a sisterhood retreat, a formal, a parent's tea, etc. is going to be a piece of cake for any of these girls because they've been leaders since age 12.
ETA: They're planning a trip to Missouri too.. no clue what they plan to do there but they are having to stay in a budget, choose activities, food, etc. for that too.

They sound like a great bunch of Girl Scouts! Have they earned their Bronze Award?
My daughter's 6th grade troop (we were in KS at the time) went to St. Louis over a 3 day weekend back in 2000. They had a blast!

You know, I think what we have here, in regards to GSA, is another "old school" vs. "new school."
(For my history, both my sister & I were GS in the 1970s, left when we got involved in school activities. Currently, my sister has been troop leader for a few years...for her daughter's troop.)
Back to my point: GSA has been revamping their curriculum for the past couple years. I think the troop leadership is a matter of which leaders are quick to embrace the new style.
Maybe some of the leaders are just leading the way THEY were led, and refuse to try anything new. Kind of like those teachers currently teaching, who refuse to incorporate technology in their lessons. KWIM?
So then, you have the same old, stale curriculum.
If a leader doesn't want to go camping ("Eww! bugs!"), then she won't plan camping trips. That is a loss for the girls in the troop.
If a leader wants to teach the girls how to sew on a button....yawn! But if she teaches them how to use a BeDazzler (as seen on The Apprentice ) then she's cool.

I wish someone would've shown me how to use a Bedazzler. I could never get the damn thing to work (was trying to make a baby tee with rhinestone K and D)

You shouldn't have dropped out of Girl Scouts to go to law school!

I had a Bedazzler! Loved it! That was like 15 years ago so I have no clue where it is now.

I'm not trying to insinuate that anyone's childhood is a myth. I'm only pointing out that yes, while some GS troops only have the opportunity to sell cookies and make crafts, many, many others have the opportunities to do amazing things. I was trying to make a correlation to what most on hear hold dear to their hearts - their GLO.
We all get up in arms when we read or hear about someone bashing greeks. I even listed some common stereotypes (funny though, I don't think I ever mentioned hazing) such as "paying for friends" and "greeks don't care about their philanthropies, they just do it because they have to" - those two stereotypes are alive on my campus today and I love greekchat because I can find other's experiences with similar issues and come up with ways to combat them.
My point is that in some chapters, greeks probably don't really care about their philanthropy. But is it fair to say that for all? Is anyone drawing the connection yet? Nationally, Girl Scouts has fabulous programs. It's unfortunate that some don't get to take full advantage of that - just like it's unfortunate that some sorority sisters don't get to take full advantage of what their organization has to offer.
If I ran around saying XYZs were all sluts and you were a lifelong member or XYZ. You'd probably get pretty upset.
As a lifelong member of Girl Scouts, I natually get upset when people say my organization perpetuates societal gendering. I even get upset when people say that Girl Scouts is only now finally beginning to change because I know that their programs have always been evolving. I know that forcing women into the home to cook and sew has never been the goal (Juliette Lowe with the first American GS troop ever strung up curtains around an outdoor court so that her troop could wear their bloomers while they played sports!)
I'm sorry I've offended so many people by defending an organization I've gained so much from.

No one was bashing the GS. People were just being painfully honest just like some things people say about Greekdom are true, either at the chapter or national levels. We have already established that there are still GS troops that perpetuate gendered stereotypes and socialization. Moving on.

Yeah, after reading all this I'm reminded of my 4-H experience. All our club ever did was cook a meal, eat it, wash the dishes and do sewing projects on our own. The club 2 miles away raised livestock, went on tons of cool trips, you name it. It all depends who's running that particular club/troop and how much the parents of the members expect from it.

Kappa Delta sorority has decided to join forces with Dove to help take part in their Real Beauty campaign. Kappa Delta's efforts with both the Girl Scout's of America and Prevent Child Abuse America has led them to joining Dove in an effort to help improve the self esteem or girls across the united states.
Dove is airing their new commercial during the super bowl. The article below is their press release and they mention their new involvement in Kappa Delta.
I am so happy, I have been a huge fan of the Dove campaign for real beauty and I am so proud that my organization is taking part in it. I'm hope this is a first step and other national sororities will join in this campaign and help bring an end to the underfed stereotypes that many young girls and older girls believe they need to achieve.

This is really good news. Way to go, KD! I noticed the commercial during the Super Bowl.
