We currently have 4 gerbils all male and one toad. My 10 year old really loves those little guys.

Tom- I am not surprised that a male on this board refers to a woman as a pet and you would be the one. Shame on you.

Can someone tell me what a gerbil is? Apparently they are illegal to own in the State of California. But I always thought they were like hamsters.

I've thought more and more about getting a rat. They have one at the shelter that I want to look at. However I called my apartment about having small animals in cages. I don't need a deposit for those except for rabbits, but she also said that if I were to get a cat and not tell her about it, then she would turn a blind eye. However, I'd be responsible for replacing the carpet upon move out if something happened.

I'd go for the caged animals while you are still in an apartment. I have a male cat who has had a ton of health issues over the past couple of years. Because of that, I have had to throw out a ton of furniture he ruined. He is good now and his condition is under control but if I knew then what I know now I would have waited on the cat.
