I agree with you.

When I read this book it hurt me, not as a sorority girl, but as a journalism major. I spent most of the time angry at her not because she was giving away "secrets" or calling sorority girls sluts, but because in doing this she was giving up all claim of being a journalist. The first thing they told me in Writing for the Media was that exposes are good, and it's up to us (Journalists) to expose the truth, but that we had to respect our subjects and that no one would ever be willing to give us an interview if we had the reputation of slandering or mocking them. This is just what she does, and I feel bad for the girls she followed, because they are the only ones who really should be hurt by this.

People who take this book as the honest and complete truth are usually people who wanted to think bad things about Greeks in the first place. The movie will prbably be the same.... though one of my sisters won't go to pancake feeds anymore because of this book

Well said. I do think it reflects badly on honest journalists out there because they DO exist. She's just not one of them. Honestly I don't have a problem with people making money off a subject (as long as they aren't guilty of slandering their subjects...and as far as we know, she isn't) and writing something that is, to anyone with any first hand experience, very biased and very sensationalized. Props to them for making more money than I ever will. BUT I firmly believe that if you decide to claim your account is 100% truthful or 100% unbiased...and you claim that it is JOURNALISM then it should be. I wouldn't be disgusted with her at all if she had been honest...and published the book as what it is: sensationalism.

And of course, the cute wrap up with "advice" to people who have been doing this their whole lives was amusing. There is a place in the world for outside advice...every organization needs it. BUT it should be better researched than hers was. There were about a million problems with her overly simplistic "solutions"...and why she thinks that she is the first person to come up with them I can't imagine. She could have left all of that out.

Oh, man! You took my role! Maybe I'll be the one who points it out when giving house tours?

I have not read this book, but judging from all the things that have been written about it, I know I would hate it. It took months to convience my parents and family that joining a sorority did not make me a slut! What gain is there from reading a book like that?

Now I'm one to say don't knock it before you try it (with the exception of activities that will end up in immense pain, humiliation, or wastes of time...). I read it because so many said, without reading it, that it was garbage, trash, she had no right, etc. etc. So I DID take the time to read it and can safely say that I do agree that it is in no way a work of professional journalism and isn't exactly a great work of literature. I've said a few times what my main problem with the book is.

I do encourage others to read it before denouncing...I'd recommend the local library. It isn't worth your bucks. I'd be a lot more receptive, personally , if she had actually persued this as a professional journalist would. Had she taken the time to truly examine the Greek SYSTEM and not the drama of the house, I'd be interested. This would, of course, take several more years of work than I'm sure an opportunist would be willing to put forth, as a balanced account would include experience in different kinds of chapters in different regions of the country.

Fortunately I didn't have your problem as my parents were Greeks themselves and were also realists...becoming Greek won't turn you into a slut or a druggie regardless of the degree of sluttieness or druggieness (or lack thereof) in the chapter. Personal responsibility is gone these days, but peer pressure is NOT a valid excuse after 8th grade.

Thanks Squirrel Girl! I honestly asked because I wanted to know if it was worth reading it. I will take your suggestion and read the book, but borrow it from the library!

Definitely read it. If nothing else, it reads like a good trashy novel, so I pick it up every now and then and reread it for some mindless entertainment. I read it before I went through recruitment but I knew it wasn't real and it was really sensationalized. If you like greek life, you like it. If you don't like it, you'll already have that bias before you read the book and I don't really think it's a swayer either way.

I attempted to read this book, but it was so trashy that I found myself skimming it more than reading it. I'm glad I only borrowed it from the library. Plus I was annoyed by the fact that she called AOII "Alpha Omega Pi".

Although I am bummed that there are no pregant sorority girls in the book- because I would have been PERFECT for that role.

I kinda liked that book! It was pretty well written. I do think it casted an unfortunate shadow of negativity on the whole Greek thing, though. Here is my analysis of the book: Sometimes, people have problems and here are some problems in the lives of a few people (who also happen to be in sororities). Still a good book though.

Not to change the "subject" in a way, BUT I was watching ABC family last night and saw previews for a new show called "Greek" it pretty much reminded me of pledged in a few briefs seconds. I was in shock and then went to their website: http://abcfamily.go.com/shows/greek/

They show the tittle plastered on a red plastic cup...anyways!

I know that morbid curiosity will get the best of us I am sure. I plan to DVR it so that I can pause and scream at the TV.

Just thought you all should know
