5 Reason not to get an iPhone
my first reason is I can't afford nor need it....LOL
Gina Hughes
The Techie Diva
The iPhone hype is so intense right now, I think people will be buying this phone based on hype alone. I mean, is the phone really that great? Our duty is to keep you informed regarding details we come across, so the more I read about the iPhone, the less I want it.
At a glance, the device looks fantastic, features sound fun, and there's no doubt this phone is the "it" phone this year. But realistically, would you pay $500-$600 for any other phone? Like many of you, I'm still debating whether to buy an iPhone or not, so I've compiled a list of cons (since the pros are obvious) just to give myself a reality-check come Friday night.

i have no desire to get this phone
i heard a review of it on NPR this morning, and he was saying that AT&T's service is absolutely horrible and really slow (like, he said that without a Wi-fi hotspot, you'll wish you had dial-up its that slow)
whats the point of all the gadgetry if the main purposes (as a phone and internet) are basically inefficient...?
(he also said that making a call on the phone takes about 6 "touches/keystrokes"... that to me is ridiculous)

i'll admit, the commercials make it look like something you would play with all day at work, instead of actually work. and the screen is big enough that i wouldnt have to squint to make things out.
that said, there is no way in hell id drop 5 or 6 hundred dollars on a PHONE. if someone wants to give me one out of the goodness of their hearts, ill definately take it. until then? and before they work the glitches out? (because you know there will be glitches...there will be an iphone350 or something by next year, just wait)

*sigh, daemon, its all about convenience! people want to do all that stuff on one tiny, expensive gadget that others will lust after! i dont do much travel, but cant a laptop do the whole dvd/cd/playlist/internet/phone thing? i'd truthfully rather have one really super laptop than the iphone.
that isnt going to stop me from playing with it as soon as i can find one

The 1st gen is bound to be clunky.
I think it has a lot of potential. When my unit returns from Iraq I imagine that it will be lower in cost and the kinks will be worked out. Then I'll probably get one-or a phone that is very similar.

Some of the technical and costs points really make you think. I'm not saying it's not a good phone, but still... you won't see me with one any time soon. But I do <3 apple.

Why bash it if you don't understand it?
It works on AT&T edge which downloads at 25kbps, and some people even have commented that EDGE got a recent speed boost. It was designed to lock into wifi signals because the fact of the matter is that usually you can find a signal everywhere you go and because wifi uses much less energy and isn't a battery drain like 3G. On top of that 3G is expensive. Nobody pays for the service because of that expense. When it comes out in Europe they say it may link to the 3G networks because costs are lower there. So the speed thing is BS. It works great at loading internet pages.
And I'm not understand the 6 clicks thing. Making calls was really easy from my playing with it.
The only thing that's negative right now to me is the storage capacity. Nothing is perfect, but there are tons of positive reviews about it such as the one in the NYTimes and most people agree it's a great product.

If you don't have the money for this phone that's fine. Most people don't have that kind of cash laying around and it's scary to think you'd be at a club and lose an expensive phone just like that. But it seems like you're out on an anti-iphone crusade.

The capacity issue is what has me hung up. If they're able to have 60GB iPods at about that same size, I don't see what's keeping them from doing it now other than the fact that they want to be able to sell us something later as an upgrade.
As for the WiFi being everywhere, Rudey, maybe in larger cities. While it's pretty much everywhere in downtown OKC, where I live, that's not a very large area at all. I'd assume most mid-size cities like OKC are similar in that regard.
The monthly cost thing would be about the same for me. Do you get to keep your rollover minutes in an iPhone plan?

Are you going to be walking around downtown OKC and watching a feature length movie on your iphone? Not likely because most people don't use it to watch long videos, most people don't need heavy bandwidth while walking around and usually screw around with something like that in the office. And really if OKC is not technologically advanced I see no point in complaining that someone hasn't made a technologically advanced phone for the 2 people that might demand one.
