Kicked Off the Plane for Coughing?

This 16 year old was kicked off her flight because of a really bad coughing fit

if i remember correctly from the story, the girl had some illness right? the pilot "kicked her off" the plane because he didnt want to risk her getting sicker throughout a 10-hr flight and having to emergency land.

Continental DID pay for her flight tho... and if the girl wasnt in a rush to be anywhere (ie for vacation) then whatever man.

(but i know id be upset if it was me.)

from what i understand, she was on a school trip and caught a cold. she and her classmates were on their way home to Hawaii and she couldn't stop coughing while on the plane. a doctor on board said it would be OK for her to make the flight, but for whatever reason, the captain felt the need to put her off.

She's going to Egypt next week for a wedding...hopefully she won't be sick this time.

As unfair as it sounds, we've all been on flights where someone's coughed uncontrollably and I'm sure we've turned and breathed the other way because the coughing made us feel uncomfortable.

I've taken that EWR-HNL nonstop many times and it's one long azz flight. If something happened to her midflight, I'm sure it would have been a pain to find a major airport to land the 767 and if they were over ocean, then ! Remember that it's 5-5 1/2 hrs from LA to HNL!

They interviewed her on the local news the other night and she didn't seem like she was too upset about it. Continental took care of their expenses while in NYC, but I'm surprised they didn't help them find hotel accomodations after they were asked to leave the plane. They usually offer that when the flight's oversold.

I'm the lone yes vote. Looking at it from a passenger standpoint, it would have made me nervous for someone to be having an uncontrollable coughing fit in such a contained environment. Also taking a flight with a cold is miserable as is and this was a ten hour flight. No telling what more could have happened to her in that time.

As for the doctor, it doesn't say what kind of doctor. LOL

remind me to throw that one in the "what i've learned from GC" thread.
i'm glad the girl handled it OK.

however if it was JUST a cold, then i dont see much room for it to have gotten so bad that they'd have to emergency land...

I agree. I've had to fly sick before -- and those OTC drugs that knock you out are just fabulous.
