August 8th
Beta's 167th birthday is coming soon. Does anyone have any special plans for it?

It is interesting to recall that this calendar is the same as 1989, when Beta turned 150...
Hmmm... at 9PM on 8/8 in Oxford, on the third floor of Old Main (well, Harrison Hall, the best one could do in 1989), in the southeast corner of the central part of the building...
"Though it's just a memory some memories last forever." (Rush, "Lakeside Park")
Or as Knox would put it: esto perpetua!

I will be at my local church, going through the standard 'baptism classes' for my newborn daughter. My father-in-law shares the same b-day as Beta - so, I have a lot going on this year. I also have a pics of me in front of the plaques in Harrison Hall - I will never forget when the EC (at the time) took us into a classroom within Harrison Hall, and said "well, this is where it all started". And I was like, 'that's it? Where is the rose above the door?"
I like seeing the Phi Delta Theta plaque outside the dorm where they were founded, and the Sigma Chi plaque outside their building downtown where they were founded. Actually, I like reading all fraternity histories....good stuff. We are all unique.

Just to be clear: the REAL Old Main was torn down in the 1950s, and the current Harrison Hall was built... the closest one can come to the location is the eastern corner of a central third-floor classroom on the southern side of the building. I have actually seen a picture of the Union Lit Hall, though it was nowhere near old enough... I've also read their constitution. If one examines that one, as well as the Erodelphian, one will get some VERY STRONG HINTS as to how Knox and Marshall went about their work. One needs to remember that Knox, graduating from college at the age of 19, on that Thursday in August, was quite good at Greek, as were all the rest.

Happy Birthday, Beta! You've done wonderous things for me. I hope that I can one day do the same for you and my brothers.

Unfortunatly I was packing my stuff up to fly from WA to VA. That was a fun way to spend the 167th birth of Beta...
