Nelia Rules

I was wonderin from some of the older and newer members of our organizations how you all felt on Pari. What I mean is, if a brother/soror had on a shirt, hat, jacket, book bag, AND a keychain, what would u think?
I know in this day and time I believe that more than one piece of Nelia is overboard. But times have changed, so how do some of you feel?

FOR ME, one wearable piece and one utility piece is more than enough....

Jacket and umbrella
Shirt and bag
Shirt and keychain
Hat and umbrella

Etc....

I think you can get away with a shirt and jacket if you are going to a Greek event. But in those cases, tuck in the lanyard and wear a different hat or bag.

ETA: I am three in Alpha and seven in APO, so I guess I am more of a veteran now, lol

My dad pledged Kappa in '53 (Beta Chapter). He wears his 50-year pin on his lapel and on very special fraternity occasions or at Omega Omega services, he will wear a red blazer with the crest on it. He has gotten all kinds of hats and shirts over the years but he never wears them -- not his style.

I just crossed a month ago and I guess I'm a chip off the old block. I have a charm with the letters that I wear on my chain and a little paddle in the rearview mirror of my car and that's pretty much all I "wear" consistently. I have a little pinky ring too but I don't wear it everyday. I wore a t-shirt and a hat when our chapter participated in a charity walk recently, and that was a "lot" for me.

I never wear two pieces of pary at the same time. The only thing I normally wear is my dog tag and the KAY on my keychain. If I have a shirt on, I won't have the dog tag on. I have two hates (both are the same actually) and I've never worn them...

The only times when I see a member of an org go all out on 'nalia is after they just crossed (my observation and self confession ). I see it 'worse' on the girls than guys. I've seen girls with the letter t-shirt, letter tote bag with the letter umbrella poking out, letter ear rings / bracelet / necklace and letter key chain - all worn at the same time. Neos are fun.

Personally, as I've gotten older I have toned it down. I'll just wear a t-shirt and my car keys are on a SGR key chain. And, I have a couple of letter tote bags that I use - one for sorority meetings and one for work.

So, I guess to answer your question - I have no problem with 'nalia being too little or too much.

Or on seasoned/old school members. After a certain number of years, they have earned the right to wear 'nalia head to toe.

I'm going on 7 years and I don't wear much 'nalia these days. I usually just have my umbrella and and maybe a t-shirt at informal chapter or committee meetings.

Wow. The only time I've seen somone wear two or more pieces of pari is if they were *whispering* paper. Of course that's what we were taught undergrad. A key chain you can get away with, an umbrella too. Never a shirt & jacket, shirt & shoes, Depending on how big the lettering is, even a shirt & bag can be an issue. Alumni Bruhs don't fall under this rule. They were as many pieces as can fit on them...lol!

See me and marquise1911 was brought in the same way. Around my parts, if you are wearing more than one piece of nelia, and you are a NUPE, you will be questioned on the spot! I don't know if other orgs have similiar rules, but in the SE Province that's how it goes. I've been other places where it's perfectly fine to O.D. on the nelia.

I think even as Alumni, sometimes it is overdone. Subtlness(sp) says a lot. I may wear a t-shirt, or carry an umbrella if it is raining. My key chain is usually in my pocket, or sometimes a dog tag. Never all at once. Very rarely wear my jacket. I will more often wear the colors. Red Polo shirt, white Polo pants, white polo hat with YO on the back. That's it.

Too much of one thing can look like a room with Burberry wall paper
