Recruitment Advice

Hello!

I am new to greek chat and this is my first post. I am currently a freshman in a school in the new england area. Recruitment at my school is somewhat competitive, but not as competitive as the schools in the south, in fact compared to them my school sounds relatively easy to get a bid. I went through recruitment in the fall but between the first and second round I dropped. The reason was that a new sorority was colonizing on my campus. I really felt a strong connection to the sorority and I fell in love this the idea of being a founding sister and starting something new and the philanthropy was amazing and I felt great about trying to do this. I went to all the events they held for PNMs and I made a great connection with the woman living on campus to help start this colony. I thought I did everything right. Until the day we found out who was asked back and who wasn't. My roommate did this new sorority as well and received a text that morning saying congratulations. I did not. I knew at the moment that everything I worked for was gone, that I basically threw away my chances of joining the one thing I have dreamed of for the past four years. I went to pick up my envelope knowing my fate, and I opened it alone in an empty room on campus. It said I wasn't invited back and that not everyone can be apart of the colony. So, I apologize for this long story, but I was wondering what can I do now? I dropped from regular recruitment, so if I were to go through again next fall wouldn't that make me look bad? Do you suggest I try going through recruitment again in the fall? Or did I completely ruin my chances because of this? I am honestly crushed and I just want to be able to do the one thing I have always wanted. Please help me. Thank you!

You can let your Greek Life office, and all your friends who are in sororities, that you are interested in informal rush and in COB.

You can go through formal rush again next fall.

The only way you can be certain not to get a bid is not to go through.

In the meantime, get active on your campus, make friends, and keep your grades up.

Thank you DGTess for your response. I am unfamiliar with COB and how informal recruitment will work at my school, so I plan to email the greek life office to discuss my options. Thank you for reassuring me that all hope is not lost and that I still can try again.

Don't email them. Call them on the phone - the old school way. Speak to the sorority adviser and ask all your questions.

TL; DR: Dropped out of formal to do colony recruitment and didn't get a bid. Still interested in pursuing sorority membership.

You don't know until you try. Plenty of people drop out for a variety of reasons. Try again. I wouldn't bring up prior recruitment attempts when you attend the next. The sorority may have a general idea of who has rushed before, but the chances of your rusher knowing your life story before you walk through the door are nil: just focus on getting to know the women and making friends.

I would love to call them, I feel like it is easier to get my thoughts across by speaking rather than in writing. My only issue is that the only contact information for the Greek Coordinator I was provided with is an email, so I will have to go with that. I am in the process of looking up a phone number for the Coordinator though, and fingers crossed that I find one.

Call the main number someone would call if they were just a random person calling your school. Get the Greek life/student life office number from the operator. DO NOT EMAIL. It will get lost in the shuffle.

You have kind of a freebie for dropping out in that you did it because of the colony. I would just say it didn't work out if you are questioned about it, don't say that they didn't choose you.

And if you are looking for your Greek home, IT'S COMPETITIVE. Even if there are 2.5 girls going through rush.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I plan to call tomorrow since I have only a morning class and have a majority of my day free where my roommates will not be in the room.

I am sure there is a Faculty Directory on your school's web site. All of them have one.
