ASU Rush

Looking forward to rushing this Fall. I'm pretty sure which org I want to be a part of, should I even rush any of the other fraternities?

App State? Arizona State? Arkansas State? . . .

Regardless, bear in mind the advice not to put all of your eggs in one basket. What makes you "pretty sure" which fraternity you want to be in? Do you actually know guys in the chapter (or in other chapters for comparison), or are you going off reputation? Consider the possibility that you might get there and find you don't like the chapter as much as you thought you would. And consider the possibility that even if you do like them, they may not see you fitting in and may not offer you a bid.

You owe it to yourself to at least check out other chapters and give them a chance to get to know you.

Arizona State.

I started researching the different fraternities and their histories and stuff; this particular fraternity had a story that I really dig and seems like would be a good fit for me. The reputation is actually the draw-back, it looks like they have a pretty shitty rep at ASU; they don't really seem to be top house anywhere actually, at least not at the few schools that are at all a consideration for me. I'm not a super judgmental dude; I was prom king and was friends with a few dorky kids, but I don't know how different the Greek world will be. I kind of have this notion that if I get there and they are lame, maybe I can help turn the chapter around; might take a couple years after I'm gone, but I can help.

It seems that a lot of people focus on fitting with the particular chapter, is the national organization not as important?

I know it's possible that I a bid doesn't get offered, but I'm counting that in the unlikely column; I'm not just some lame taker, I actually have a bit to bring to the table (finances, network, girls, strong gpa). I know that none of that guarantees me anything, so not getting a bid is a background concern.

Thanks for sharing your insight!

During the first few weeks of school many fraternities will have open parties, that's one of your best chances to get a feel for the different houses before rush starts and get your foot in the door with some of the actives. During the first night of rush go to walk around, meet a few guys from each house, then rush your top three. It's never a good idea to "suicide" or rush just one fraternity. As far as reputations go, the "tiers" are not really set in stone and change every year. About half of the fraternities rent/own entire apartment complexes or hotels so there is some sort of housing for members. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

[mini-hijack] I left AZ in 2010, so I'm obviously a bit behind on the news surrounding my awesome alma mater, but what happened to the fraternity houses by the stadium? I know when Crow took over shit came down. When I was there, he was super anti-Greek, not sure if that is still the case. I also remember that they (ASU) was building a dorm like the sororities have on Apache. Is that where most of the guys live now? [/end mini-hijack]

The houses were demolished in the fall last year as Sigma Nu vacated their house last Spring after being kicked off campus. While Crow is still anti-Greek we have gotten two new fraternities Delta Sigma Phi and Pi Kappa Alpha along with a sorority, Sigma Kappa, within the last year.

As far as the Adelphi II dorms, no fraternity lives there, it's a freshman residence hall now. Most of the fraternities buy/rent motels or apartment complexes and have their own "mini row".

In NIC and/or NPC rush, no, not really, unless you are a legacy. National groups have 100s of chapters and there's no way every one of them will be composed of the same kind of people at every campus.
