Deferred Recruitment Question

Good morning!

I hope all of you are enjoying the New Years, I definitely am! I can't wait to get back to school and participate in recruitment! The advice on Greek Chat suggests to be prepared to answer questions about how you spent your time over break, amongst other topics. However, the last month or so of my first semester and most of my break was clouded by a cancer scare. I am so thankful for a clean bill of health, but am curious as to whether or not I should use discretion when describing my winter break. On one hand, I would not want to make any of the rushers uncomfortable or cause conversation to be difficult. On the other, my experience has become an important part of me and has also greatly contributed to my reasons for wanting to join a sorority. I guess I am conflicted and worried that revealing this information may leave some sort of impression that would jeopardize my chances as a PNM. All in all, this experience has reinforced in me that a real sisterhood and community of people who you support and will support you is something to be cherished, and I am grateful for the opportunity to become a part of that.

Just say you spent a lot of time with your family and friends. This topic is way too much of a bummer and might make many people uncomfortable (and we automatically want to spurn that which makes us uncomfortable). The fact that you've grown from it is something that will show through simply as you go through life and through rush. Good to hear that you came through it all OK.

Exactly. If they're sympathetic it will be because of someone they know who blah blah blah. And if they're not sympathetic, you'll just bring the conversation to a screeching halt. Find SOMETHING you can talk about. You undoubtedly went to movies, restaurants, played in the snow, got drunk and puked in your neighbor's yard (ok, just checking that you're paying attention). In short, you did stuff. And if you really did NOTHING worth repeating, you might want to learn quickly the art of changing the subject to a time you DO want to talk about. "I didn't do as much over Christmas as I did last summer when I ..."

thank you both so much!! i wasn't sure how to handle this situation, because i know that honesty is important during recruitment. but there is no need to make anyone unnecessarily uncomfortable! instead, i will definitely focus on sharing my positive moments from winter break. thank you again!
