Ohio University Sorority accused of property damage at formal
http://thepost.baker.ohiou.edu/main....ectionID=2&S=1
Is there something in the water in Ohio that is making these sororities go crazy at formal?
I graduated from Ohio University (ahem- a "few" years ago) and the Pi Phis that I was friends with back then would have never done anything like this!

Sounds awfully sketchy. I'll wait to see when more details come out.

Exactly. Lack of documentation and refusal to provide any that they do have doesn't bode well for a lawsuit.

I heard snippets about this on the radio this morning (I was only half paying attention) and I distinctly heard "Ohio" and "Pi Beta Phi". I thought, wow, this is an old story, we're been talking about this on GC for awhile. Nope. My mind is sufficiently boggled.

I agree totally, IrishLake. And I state this, again: it could happen to ANY sorority or fraternity. There but for the grace of god go you, or I...
panhellenically yours...

Very shady. I hope Pi Phi does not pay them a dime.

Athens, Ohio isn't a very big town, so there is only one hotel in town that can handle a sorority formal- so most sororities travel by bus to another place- and Parkersburg is the closest larger town (relatively speaking).
If these charges are trumped up, I hope the bad press doesn't make other locations in Parkersburg shy away from hosting formals.

They're obviously piggybacking this off all the other reports that have come out. I would tell them to go pound sand.

It was on the news this morning comparing the OU group to Miami. Apples and Oranges if you asked me.

It was on the morning show that I listen to in Philadelphia. The radio personalities were actually making fun of the people who wrote the latest allegations and also mentioned that it sounded like they were piggy backing the Miami Pi Phi story.

Updated story: http://thepost.baker.ohiou.edu/main....rticleID=31939
Sorority sidesteps suit, insurance pays $44,000
The Parkersburg Art Center will not sue the Ohio University chapter of Pi Beta Phi sorority after collecting more than $44,000 in insurance money, but yesterday the center's lawyer said insurance adjustors could still file a lawsuit.
The art center will receive more than $44,000 for repairs and cleanup after the sorority's winter formal where attendees reportedly used plates as missiles during food fights, poured alcohol on the ballroom dance floor and ruined flowers and silk tablecloths. The center also said one couple broke a sink by having sex on it.
The center threatened to sue affiliates of Pi Beta Phi - including the chapter's president, the national sorority, the Pi Beta Phi Foundation and the OU Board of Trustees - for the full cost of damages allegedly caused by the sorority during its March 6 winter formal. Now, the decision of whether, when and whom to sue is in the hands of the West Virginia Board of Risk and Insurance Management, said Richard A. Hayhurst, lawyer for the center and husband of its director.
The art center will receive about $44,296 after it pays a $2,500 deductible, said Diane Holley-Brown, director of communication for the insurance board.

This may be a moot point now that they collected insurance, but why would the art center sue the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, which is a separate philanthropic arm? Or is this just another example of the art center's shenanigans?
