I'm always surprised and shocked when I hear about incest. The celebrity status makes it material for mainstream media. It also makes me wonder why the hell we're being told about it all these years later.

I am not all that surprised anymore...I think I am more surprised to see that in order for some celebs to retain any relevancy , they resort to tell the world about their dirty secrets.

That's why you hear about things like this years later.

I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in the back of her mind this thought went through it:

"If Valerie can come back out of nowhere and make money for Jenny Craig, tehn why can't I sell my story and do the same?"

This story has been bothering me. Really, really bothering me. So sad and gross if it is true. Her father giving her drugs and having sex with her...her having sex with Mick Jager (wasn't it he?) when she was 18.....

She said she kept it a secret because she didn't want to ruin her father's reputation. Umm...thanks for sharing now, I guess.

Then again, I'm conflicted because who are we to want people (celebrities or people who held onto info for 30 years) to hold onto these types of things?

I think it's gross that it happened but I don't feel one way or the other about her in particular sharing it. I think incest is one of those things that is swept under the rug and probably needs to be more "demystified" for lack of a better word.

It annoys me too that we know this. This should be between Ms. Phillips and her therapist and relevant family members/friends, and not the entire country.

I don't know how we got all confessional about our pasts, but I don't really care about this.
