Tennis Tantrums

Serena Williams lost the US open because of her tantrum. Kinda reminds me of John McEnroe's tantrums. I thought his were the best ones. Here's the youtube. If someone can post an actual news link, that would be fabulous, because I don't know how to.

I watched it twice. The first time I thought the judge was wrong. The second time I could see that as she made contact with the ball her foot was on the line.

But what a BABY that line judge is!

Williams showed no class in the press conference. She didn't take responsibility for her actions or apologise. The line judge wasn't a baby. Williams was a spoiled bitch.

True, but I wonder what kind of stress she was under to make her crack like that. Something has to make someone, who usually conducts themself well, to fly off the handle. I did it before during a tennis match cuz I was just having a bad day.

I love jokes and trash talking but watching that even made ME cringe.

I think it's a combination of two things:

1) Bad timing: This isn't the 80s and John McEnroe (love him!!!!) temper tantrums have stopped being funny and cool. They've clamped down on those things since then because of complaints of unsportswomanlike conduct; fear of crazy fans and athletes; terrorist threats, etc.

2) Characteristics: She's a burly Black woman, who sometimes lookalikeaBlackman, talking to a white woman.

I don't know...I mean, people still love a good temper tantrum in other sports. I think it has more to do with #2 than #1.

Other sports. Not necessarily tennis. There were once complaints that tennis was transforming from a ritsy club sport to a street sport with shouting players wearing bandanas. LOL

I also think it is more #2 but didn't want to...frighten people. Ya know.

probably the fact that she was gettin' whooped by an unranked woman who hasn't played in at least 18 months (and eventual US Open winner.)

I agree. This really doesn't seem to be typical behavior for her.

So what has been done in the past when other tennis players have flown off the handle?

...who thought that said burly Black woman was threatening to kill her.

Now we ALL know a threat with a tennis ball rammed down ones th'oat (East B more) is a mostly empty threat since it's rather difficult to do.

BUT...

Looking at the little woman and the BIG Tennis player, then that threat was thought to be real.
