Any woman wishing to join any of the 26 NPC member sororities must be a current full-time student at the school where the chapter is. We are not permitted to extend bids to those women who don't fit that criteria.

Here is the situation: Some years back (before I was a brother) our chapter gave a bid to a kid who, at the time was not a student at PSB. He had been hanging around with all the brothers for a while and everyone liked him a lot. In the spring semester, he was given a bid, and accepted. He got in, took a little, had a job and everything a regular brother would do. It wasn't untile the semester after he was initiated that he became a student at PSB. He has since dropped out and is now an alumni.

Some of our current members want to retroactively black ball this member, only because he was bid as a non student. He's a great guy that we all like, but some people feel that he shouldn't be a brother. Has anyone else experienced this in their chapter? What did you do?

Thanks all!
If anyone should be blackballed, it's the brain trusts who gave him a bid without checking on his student status. They didn't discharge their duties to the fraternity properly - they admitted a candidate who technically was unfit for membership.

But it's over and done and he's a good brother now. I assume he paid his dues that semester, so let it go and move forward.

Is he really even a brother? Because most organizations won't even allow non-students or part time students to join. Did you all not go through your nationals on this? If you didn't, then this guy is not on record with your org and therefore is not a member.

Unfortunately, No! We didn't have Fox when 90210 started so I never got into it!

As stated earlier, if he is not registered with your (inter)national organization he is not really a member. Regardless I don't see what the purpose of retroactively blackballing him would be. What would that consist of - not inviting him to alumni events or something?

It's not worth "blackballing" him, to be quite honest. He's an alumni.

And it's happened often

Exactly, it's not worth it. Just let it be, he was a good active brother and probably a good alumni brother. He is registered as a brother with national. Just let it be, might cause a whole lot more harm, especially since it will divide the fraternity into factions.

I have to agree, there's probably no point in alienating someone who could possibly contribute time and money to helping your chapter as an alumnus.

I've been following this thread and the question that keeps coming to my mind is why? Ya'll liked this guy, so much so that you disregarded the rules by issuing him a bid and initiated him when he wasn't yet a student. What's changed? He's an alum now, do ya'll even see him much? Why is it such a big deal now to want to try to go back in time to "fix" it when it wasn't a big deal when he was active?

Sorry, but I can't let it pass. Unless he has multiple personalities, all of whom were initiated, he's an alumnus.

And yeah, the horse is already out the barn. Let it go.

If it's a "small faction" of brothers against him, and the majority of the chapter think he's just great, then, logically speaking, you should not ever get the 2/3 majority vote two weeks in a row, right?

Keep voting "no" on the blackballing until the 2-3 brothers give up and let it go. If the whole chapter tells them to shut up and keeps voting "no", what are the complainers supposed to do? Maybe you can tell them to sit down and keep their yaps shut or else the majority of the chapter will blackball *them* for being stupid.

Contact your fraternity's headquarters. I find it highly improbable that a collegiate chapter can vote to remove an alumnus from the fraternity's roles. Alumni generally are not under the purview of collegiate chapters. Maybe your fraternity is different, but it just seems a little odd.
