missblonde- Dorms or off campus house/apartment. I highly doubt that anyone who is not yet initiated would ever be allowed to live in the sorority house. Also, there are many houses who don't let sophomores live there (or it's understood that all the spots are for seniors and exec members). The earliest you could possibly live in a sorority house would be the semester after you are initiated, since it's in the house's best interest to be at full living capacity at all times ($). If they have an open spot, they will be doing everything in their power to fill it before rush & the school year starts. [Sorry I know that wasn't worded the best, basically no you won't be able to live in a sorority house immediately.]

About quota- the number 92 keeps being passed around. Could change with late additions, I have no idea. The increase in total PNM numbers has bumped up quota by around 20 girls.

Tuuthfairy- I see no problem with sending aunt&daughter- I would check about aunt's daughter because of "Due to space constrictions, however, only new members and their parents will be permitted inside the sorority houses on Bid Day."

Magnoliacurious- I doubt the crowding problem will ever truly be solved. The number of sorority women far exceeds the capacity of the houses already. Unless the University were to tear down every single house and some buildings around sorority row and rebuild the houses bigger, there's gonna be a space issue [edit: even with the 4 new lots]. It's unfortunate that large families are at a disadvantage, but I can't think of a better idea as to how to handle the situation.

I heard from my daughter that the quota so far is 92 - the quota can be adjusted through the week based on how many girls remain in the last couple of days on rush.

There was an article in Crimson White (Bama newspaper) stating that some old buildings behind the president's home will be torn down and 4 new sorority houses will be built on that property. Existing sorority houses will be given first choice to bid for that space for new/bigger houses and then sororities wanting to colonize at Bama will be given the opportunity to take existing houses or new houses if not taken. It is my understanding Delta Gamma did not colonize this year because of space.

i would bet that the university does not own the sorority houses(i know they don't own the ZTA house=our national housing corporation does), therefore, they would not be tearing any of them down.

No but the University owns the land they all sit on. And they have torn down several over the years for the stadium expansions. The DG, AEPi, D Phi E and Pi Phi houses were torn down for the East Side upper deck. Pi Phi then moved over between Chi O and KD. The other 3 groups were gone by then and the houses rented to other entities. So, if the university wanted to move all of them to another location, which they don't because they are expanding sorority row by 4 lots, they could buy back the "improvements" according to the terms of the land leases.

The article said it was tearing down old buildings(not sorority houses) behind the president's house. The Pi Phis built a new house several years ago, because the football stadium went thru an expansion and the university needed the land.They were given new property between the ChiO and KD house.

Okay, thank you! And I thought sororities did not do "initiation" anymore because it was "hazing"?

You've been watching too many movies and listening to the misinformed media.

Initiation is a beautiful ceremony in which new members learn all the secrets of the organization. It does not involve any hazing.

Initiation is a ritual or ceremony - a process that (often largely unchanged) has been done within each organization since their earliest days of existence. Initiation may include reciting creeds, wearing symbolic clothing, singing songs, and learning the sorority secrets and ideals. It's an incredibly moving experience, and nothing but positive.

In the 26 NPC sororities, there is no hazing during formal initiation rituals (ceremonies).

Okay, and what are sorority "secrets"? Like what does it mean? Btw, thank you for helping me out because I'm fairly clueless.

I would like to add, Bamababe, that not only are the houses stretched beyond capacity, but for those of you who have not been there, the houses are almost slap up against each other...not even a driveway separates most of them. The stadium probably sits on a larger piece of land than these 15 houses do. VEry dense footprint. If you haven't been there on Bid Day or game day, you really can't believe it!

Actually - all sorority and fraternity houses on the Alabama campus are on university owned land. The sorority and fraternity houses are built with the sorority/frat moneys, but because they are on university property they house will revert back the university if the chapters no longer use it. (like a long term lease) The Alpha Phi house was once the SDT house and the Lambda Chis lived there for a year when their new house was being built. Several frat houses have been built recently - and their old houses are now being used by other houses. the PIKES are moving in this fall and the ATO are building right now.

oh wow! do they pay the sorority/fraternity if they tear down their house? as we all know, it would cost millions of dollars to rebuild one of those houses.

I think the buildings behind the President's mansion are the University Police Building and an old early child development center. The sorority houses are a good block away. I was under the impression that the university was building a new police building over near the downtown Publix Supermarket.

When my oldest daughter pledged Tridelt, there was talk about renovating the building ... even doing away with the sleeping porch. It has not yet been done and my younger daughter is now a sophomore there.

Yes, they buy the houses ("improvements") back per the terms of the land lease. This is standard at universities where the houses are on university owned land. If they were on private land, then the house corporation would have to sell to some other independent buyer.

The university police moved some time ago. The 3 dorms will be torn down. I forget all 3 names but one was New Hall (though it was old when I was there in the 60's!). And they are not a block away. The land is adjacent to the KD and Alpha Gam houses in that cul de sac.
