In the spirit of the two gasoline threads, I thought it would be interesting to see how much other "staples" cost.

What are your staples, and what did they cost?

A gallon of milk: Skim milk, 3.49
A loaf of bread: 1.79
A dozen eggs: 2.59
Four lb of sugar: 3.99 (what happened to the 5 lb sacks?)
Yogurt, lowest price: 0.50 each
Apples: 3.99/lb
Fresh sliced store brand turkey breast: 7.99/lb (we only get 1/2 lb)
Fresh chicken breast: SCORE! 1.99/lb, so we bought 10 pounds
Cocoa Puffs 16.5 oz: 2.99 (my vice)

Groceries have definitely gone up around here. I make most of my own food from scratch, and so that is where I have noticed the increases. I remember the numbers on some of the stuff I buy all the time just because of repetition and because I am accountant by training. The "used to be prices" are about 3 months ago except where noted.

A quart of skim milk is $2.28 now- was $1.99
Loaf of bread is $3.78- was $3.49
Small bag of granola (a week's worth) is $4.68- used to be $4.25 or thereabouts
Organic chicken breasts are $5.99/lb- used to be $4.99
Bag of noodles is $1.59, up from $1.29
Prime tenderloin is running $30-32 a pound- used to be $26.99 pretty consistently
8 oz cheddar cheese is $2.28- was $1.99 just like the milk
Fresh artichokes have been $3.49+ all season, last year they were $2.50 or so.
Honeydew and canteloupe have been $3.99 each most of the time- the offseason price
Tuna is 79 cents a can- up from 59-65 cents

Not affecting me much since I am solo, but I am sure large families are feeling the pinch. It is worst with anything heavy or fresh- items that would tend to have higher shipping costs due to weight or the need for quick/refrigerated delivery.

I don't buy much else these days- but I am not seeing much pricing pressure when I do. Beer is about the same as always, as is clothing. I just got some more workout gear and I think I paid $7-8 each for Russell workout shorts and T-shirts- which is actually less than I had expected.

A gallon of milk was $4.69 and a dozen eggs were $3.29 on our last trip to Costco last Saturday.

I tried convincing the Boy that we didn't really need milk or eggs but he wouldn't have it.

I mainly buy things on sale soooooo...

Bread: $1 - $1.25 (Kroger brand)
Skim milk 1/2 gallon: $1.50 (usually 2/$3.00 at Kroger on sale.. used to always be 10/$10)
dozen lg eggs: $1.79 last time I bought them
Yogurt: about $.50 each

I buy the chicken breasts when they are buy 1, get 1 free and do other things like that. You can save a lot if you shop the sales and buy in bulk when things are on sale. Also, I tend to buy one bulk meat each time.. so I buy a big amount of ground beef one shopping trip, chicken the next, pork chops/steaks or roasts the next, depending on the sales at the time. Kroger also tends to have the same things on sale over and over, so I've gotten to know their standard sales.

6-pack Left Hand Milk Stout around $7.99

We get our beef for free from my parents. We just bought and had a whole hog processed, so our freezer is full of meat right now. We have three tomato plants that are starting to produce tomatoes and some cucumber plants that are growing in pots by our house. When the sweet corn finally matures, we'll buy a bunch and freeze that. Otherwise I'll try and buy fruits/veg when they're on sale. I would go to the farmer's market, but that's on hiatus due to the flooding.

I double checked the sugar when I was at the store yesterday. We did have 5 pound bags and they were $3.29.

The closest HyVee quit carrying it about a year ago.

I think the one a few miles further away still carries it, but the husband is the one who's been buying the beer lately, so it could very well be up to $8.99 now. It's not as fun to buy when you can't drink it.
