USF
So far my college experience has been mostly about working and taking only a few classes each semester. This year I am looking to change that completely. In high school I was involved in as many clubs as possible and my gpa was a 3.8. So I have been looking at volunteer clubs and student government but I am most interested in rushing. I just would love to meet people and the philanthropy really appeals to me. I have a few problems though.
My gpa is not spectacular. It is actually pretty average.
I am currently classified a sophomore because I haven't taken very many classes since I started but I will be 21 in August and should technically be a senior.
Since I have spent my college career focused on work I haven't been involved in any other clubs on campus.
The only thing I feel like I have going is that I am friendly and outgoing. I am not shy and I love to meet new people. I am worried that is not enough.
I am not sure how competitve USF is and I am afraid that rushing might just be pointless. I keep reading that sororities won't take you if you are an upperclassmen or if you're gpa isn't high.
Does anyone go to USF or has rushed there and knows how competitive it is?
I would really appreciate any help.

I am currently in a sorority at USF and I rushed as a 21 year old junior even though I would be not graduating for at least 2 1/2-3 yrs. GPA is an important factor when it comes down to it..every sorority has a minimum GPA for members and they range from I believe 2.25-3.0. It really depends on the school, but at USF it is common for juniors and even some seniors to recieve bids. Are you in any clubs/campus activities right now? If not, I would suggest getting involved in something before recruitment in the fall (which is when I am assuming you are planning on rushing). There are tons of things you can join at USF. Also, if your GPA is as low as you make it seem, I would really focus on that and raise it. Do those two things and based on my own experience and being on the sister side of recruitment, I think you have a good chance of getting a bid. Check out the USF Panhellenic website for more info ( www.usfpanhellenic.com) and please feel free to PM (private message) me anytime, I will gladly help!
P.S- There is going to be a Recruitment Info Meeting sometime in mid to late April for girls interested in rushing...keep an eye out for that and I will try to as well so I can let you know.

I am slightly familiar with Greek Life system at USF, mostly because I am becoming involved in the St. Petersburg Panhellenic Alumnae group. I am not sure how competitive recruitment is there ( I actually went to UNF), but recs can be a plus at any school.
I would encourage you check with the Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg Panhellenic Alum groups as I am sure between the three of them there will be some sort of recruitment seminar for those interested. This might be a good way to get recommendations.
Something in the back of my mine is telling me that USF might be opening to expansion? Maybe twinkle555 or another from USF can clafiy this?
If that is the case, getting involved with colonizing and chartering a sorority is always something to consider.

I tooootally thought she meant University of San Francisco. I was like what? Where is St. Petersburg in relation to San Francisco?

I was (as was twinkle555) assuming that she meant USF as in the University of South Florida which is in Tampa, Florida.
St. Petersburg is just across the bay and is in the metro area.
Can the poster clarify if she meant another school?

As far as I can tell, U San Francisco only has one NPC sorority (DZ), while U South Florida has 8. I would assume she's talking about the latter.
But you know what happens when you assume...

Well i go to U. of S. Florida but as you can tell, im not NPC. My org is a founding org of UGC (Unified Greek Council). We dont rush but if you for whatever reason decide not to rush or want to explore all greek options at USF (which i would strongly suggest) I'd be glad to point you in the right direction if you'd like. Just PM me.

I was wondering which USF she meant as well. If you're not talking about Florida I can help you with any questions you have regarding USF's (San Francisco) Greek life. Just private message me.

I believe that you have to be a full time (not part time) student to rush. For most schools, that means carrying 12 credits. I does not sound like you have been doing that.

Thank you for all the replies. I am referring to the university of south florida. I will definitely get involved in some extra activities now. I am in the process of raising my gpa and I am taking summer courses so that should help.
Up until this point I have not been full time but starting in the fall I will be or I feel like I will never graduate. I do know that I have to be in order to rush so that is not a problem.
Thanks again for the support.

I would think that as long as she is a full time student when she goes through recruitment, she is eligible.

Yes in order to be eligible to rush in the fall, you would need to be full time.
As for expansion, I dont think greek life is looking into it just yet. We just switched to a later recruitment date (it starts the weekend after school starts as opposed to the week before) so I think they want to see if that changes the amount of PNMs going through before they start thinking about expansion. We just had ZTA join our campus 5 years ago and our recruitment numbers have been down in the past 2 years. Hopefully the new recruitment dates will raise the numbers because right now our new member classes range from 25-30.
Lisafer05- If you would like, my recruitment story is under the "Recruitment Stories" forum...its probably a few pages back since I rushed in Fall 06. I think its a good read Good luck and Im glad you are so enthusiastic about Greek Life!! Be sure to stick around and let us know what happens!! PM whenever!
