Confused.
Hi! My friend is going through rush and she is an ABC legacy; however, she likes XYZ and is hoping for a bid. If she receives a bid from XYZ and prefs XYZ, she was still told there is a chance that because she is a legacy of ABC and they really like her that she will not get her first choice. What are the chances and have you heard of this? She's in rush now so a quick response or suggestion would be amazing!
Thanks!

You have it a little backwards - you pref someone BEFORE you receive a bid. If she likes XYZ, she should put them first. She can put ABC second and if XYZ doesn't give her a bid, there's a chance she'll get one from ABC.
If you're referring to XYZ being more likely to cut her because she's an ABC legacy, that honestly depends on the campus.

Assuming she's high enough on both bid lists to get a bid from either, her preferences come first. If she prefs XYZ and puts them first on her bid card, and appears on XYZ's bid list, she's an XYZ, regardless of her ABC status.
ETA: From what I understand, the OP is asking if the fact that her friend is a legacy would override the fact that she likes XYZ better than her leg. group.

The way I understand it, if she goes to Preference at both, it will depend on where she lands on the groups' bid lists. If she ranks XYZ #1 and she is high on their bid list, she will get a bid there, regardless of whether ABC wanted to bid her. However, if she is on XYZ list but they fill their quota before where she is on their list, and she is higher on ABC list (which is likely if she is a legacy), she may end up with a bid at ABC (if she ranks them on her bid card).
(did I get that right, more knowledgeable-PH-type-people? )

Your friend needs to go through recruitment, keeping an open mind about all the chapters and she shouldn't count her eggs until their hatched, regardless of her legacy affiliation....

The OP said her friend is rushing RIGHT NOW...and being that it's Thursday, it's very possible that she's at least halfway done and able to form opinions about the chapter and at least somewhat guage her standing with each group (yes, I know that people think they will be going back to a group and are shocked when they're not invited, but in general, most people know whether they clicked or not)... It's a very valid question - she's wondering if the legacy chapter has more "right" to her than any other group on campus.

Wow this is so helpful! Yes, she is complete with skit day and will be moving on to pref tomorrow.
Nittanyalum, i have a question after reading your post.
So, she prefs XYZ and they pref her, the computer is going to look at that and determining on the point system how high she is on the list is basically what matters.
This is such a big deal because she doesn't want to be an ABC like her mom as much as an XYZ; however, she doesnt want to cut them and risk the chance of having the other sorority which she felt was not for her at all as her second house on pref night. and there could be a chance of her accidently falling through the cracks.

Let's also just assume that XYZ knows she wants them not her legacy...

If she likes XYZ best, she should put them first on her bid card, no matter what. If she would rather run into a brick wall head first than be an ABC, she should suicide (SIP) XYZ - but know that she is not eligible for Quota Addtions that way (but is eligible to COB with them later, if they COB).
Here's the thing I think you're asking about, and it really can vary from campus to campus:
If Quota is 5, and your friend is #6 on the XYZ list, but #2 on ABC's bidlist, then I *think* there are some campuses that would QA her to XYZ if they have room for QAs, where other campuses she would be an ABC. Technically, I think NPC recommends that PNM preference comes first, but campus rules can overrride NPC in some cases.

I would tell her to make sure XYZ knows she wants them. Panhellenic rules prohibit sorority members from saying certain things, but a rushee/PNM can tell them what she wants to.

Hmm... this could be a bad situation.
She has a great attitude and is adorable and hasn't been cut through the whole process. So of course if she happened to get ABC she would be proud, but disappointed.
Her brother went to the school as well and she basically became sisters with his good girlfriends of XYZ basically she spent her time with her friends there and feels so comfortable and happy there.
Thank you everyone for your advice.
I will keep you posted on what comes out of this.

Ok, I'm probably not the most "in the know" responder so far , but here's my answer (others please jump in if I misspeak): The final result comes down to how each group does their voting and makes their bid list. And we don't know how every group does that, so I can only say that yes, basically, what you said is correct. Although I don't think "points" have anything to do with anything at actual bid-matching, I think it's just that quota (how many each chapter can take) has been set, and the computer will match everyone on XYZ's top bid list with everyone who ranked them first, if they go through their first list and didn't get quota, the computer starts matching people from the "rest" of their bid list with rushees who put them #1 until they reach quota. After they reach quota, anyone "left" on their bid list that had ranked them #1 will likely be getting a bid from their #2 or #3 (if they suicided XYZ, they won't get a bid).
Like someone else said, we won't have any knowledge whether XYZ is "less likely" to rank her high if they know she's a legacy somewhere else. I had plenty of sisters who were legacies other places so I don't see why that would happen, but again, you would be more likely to know that from local sources.
So she will need to decide whether if things don't work at XYZ, she would want to take a bid from ABC. If she Prefs there, she is likely to be high on ABCs list as a legacy, pretty much assuring her an ABC bid if she wants it (again, depending on the org, I can't guarantee this is true across the board, but that's my impression).
ETA: Wow, I took too long to respond, the thread's already done, it looks like.

Suppose she attends preference at XYZ and ABC, and her pref card reads:
1. XYZ
2. ABC
She will match with XYZ unless they fill quota before they get to her name. Just because ABC presumably "wants her more" will not override her preferences if she is also high on both lists.

Ok, I may have missed it, but has the OP stated that she is preffing at ABC (the legacy chapter)?
