welcome to greekchat.
by the way, you're still a pi phi and we have many wonderful pi phis who are active on these boards. you should visit the pi phi forum and introduce yourself.
on greekchat, we try to be supportive of greeklife everywhere and most of us try to remain p.c. when it comes to discussing greeklife at any school. many of us are especially sensitive not to discuss reputations of sororities, whether we are referring to national reps. or a specific chapter.
that being said, i always felt that you can pick up a lot of information just visiting the greek life website of the university you are wondering about. then, by visiting the individual chapter websites you can learn a little more.
unc has a nice greeklife website and the majority of the sororities had websites.
you might also try searching on gc for any rush threads from unc. i seem to remember that we have had some in recent years. that might give you a little more insight. in fact, "mandipepperidge" just completed her rush thread for us, which took place at unc. good luck to your daughter!

Greek Life at UNC
I am not sure how important recs are at UNC. I'll let a Tar Heel answer that. How exciting to have a legacy go through!

I'm an active, feel free to PM me. I will say that UNC has an incredibly united and strong Panhellenic Council. There isn't competition among the houses and the vast majority of us have friends, if not best friends, in other houses.

I'm also an active at Carolina, and I agree with all of the above sentiments. I'm a member of a newly recolonized chapter, and I'm still shocked (in a good way!) at the amount of support we've recieved from the other Panhellenic groups. If I were to rush again, I would definately taken more initiative to get recommendations; our Rho Chis told us they weren't important at all, but I had several instances where I feel they might have helped me out. After all, it can't hurt your daughter to have them!

I have to say that UNC is one of my very favorite college campuses. I just love Chapel Hill. Is Crook's Corner still there?

All of the sororities at UNC are outstanding! Just a side note--KD's UNC chapter was selected as the top chapter in the nation this year.

From what I've seen, recs aren't really a big deal at all. Most girls come into rush without recs, including most of the girls in my pledge class. I came in with no recs (I didn't even know you had to have recs for rush until I came onto this board) and was more than fine! The Pi Phi chapter is very strong and the girls are lovely (I pref-ed there hehe)
I have to agree with everyone on this thread. UNC's greek scene is very laidback with little to no competition with other sororities. We all support each other by going to other sororities events (KD chili cook off, AXO trunk show, etc.) and with 4 way mixers. All the sororities at UNC have a very strong chapter and each year the amount of PNM and interest in becoming Greek increases. Feel free to PM me if you have any question on UNC Greek life and rush!

exlurker, i certainly did not mean any disrespect toward piphicac, and i don't think the tone of my post inferred that. i meant it to be friendly and helpful. in fact, i had several pi phi's thank me in pm's for inviting the woman to visit their forum.
many women come on greekchat saying that they "were" members, most often meaning that they are not actively participating in sorority activities right now. just because they are not currently active in the alumnae world does not mean that they are still not valued members of their organization. that was my point.

FSUZeta, I do apologize if my post implied that I was criticizing you. Far from it -- I understood your point, and I'm glad that some Pi Phis thanked you for what you wrote.
In my recent post I was actually trying to make a joke by mentioning the past tense in Pi Phi's "Ring Ching Ching" song -- turned out it was a lame attempt.
You'd think that I'd know better than to risk trying for humor when words on a screen, unaccompanied by facial expression, tone of voice, and overall body language, don't go far enough toward conveying intent and meaning. But nooooo, at least in this case.
Again, I'm sorry that I gave the wrong impression.
I have deletd that lame post.
