DePauw and Delta Zeta come to an agreement

http://www.depauw.edu/news/index.asp?id=20395

November 15, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - Delta Zeta national sorority and DePauw University have reached a resolution terminating the litigation between them. Although Delta Zeta does not have a chapter on campus, the parties have agreed that with support of a group of DePauw Delta Zeta alumnae, Delta Zeta national sorority will have the opportunity to seek a return to campus beginning in academic year 2010-11. DePauw values its relationship with its alumnae who are members of Delta Zeta and recognizes that like DePauw, Delta Zeta has an objective to develop college students.

That's interesting. I wonder who will choose the group of alumnae - DePauw or DZ nationals.

I'm glad to see that it looks like forward progress is being made.

I believe every chapter, with the exception of DZ, made quota last January (or were very close), and I think every house but one is pretty large (in the 160 range). Even though 70% of the student body is a member of a GLO, I really don't see an additional organization flourishing any time soon.

Over the years, many GLOs have come and gone. DePauw is one tough campus. Very competitive, a lot of money, and very image-oriented.

The sad part is that some other chapter will be the low man on the totem pole next...

Also, one big fat YES to DePauw for not giving in to the centennial pressure. That is part of what bugged me the most about the story. They wanted the chapter open for a centennial, not for the women in the chapter.

I knew this would never see the inside of a courtroom.

This most likely refers to the very supportive alumnae chapter at DePauw.

So I wonder if some big Delta Zeta alumnae who are also DePauw graduates, said they would pull their donations from DePauw if something wasn't resolved. I would gather most DePauw graduates end up doing pretty well in life and since DZ had been there for so long that they have some well-to-do alumnae. Just a thought. I know influential sorority/fraternity alumni can have lots of pull with university administrations.

I had really hoped that it wouldn't, and am quite pleased that it won't!

Well, except on Boston Legal and that was bad enough.

Or, the opposite. I wonder if some DZ alumnae threatened to pull their contributions to the sorority?

All of my friends who were DePauw grads became doctors, lawyers and high-level execs. A few became successful musicians.

Correct on the stats and I have to agree on no new organizations flourishing anytime soon...the last time a NPC org established at DePauw it was 1949.

Depending on who you ask, some would say this is already happening.

They have the opportunity to come back - whether it will be successful, who knows. Plus, there's nothing that says that DePauw can't bring ANOTHER sorority to campus (which they have been talking about) in the time between Spring 2008 and Spring 2010. Colonizing 2 groups in that short a time might not work there. DZ should have asked that no other NPC groups come to campus btwn now & then as a condition of settling the suit. Yet another screwup.

Benzgirl - I don't think it was ever that DZ didn't want to come back, it was that DePauw wouldn't let them. So there'd really be no reason that DZ alums who supported their HQ's actions would pull their donations from DZ.

There probably are some alums who would pull donations if they weren't allowed to come back, but I'm betting there are also alums who will pull donations now since they ARE.

ETA, I looked at stories in The DePauw and the lawsuit was originally to start in September 2008. There's also a story about the national president of DZ resigning in September (sorry if this was reported earlier) and President Bottoms retiring/resigning, depending on your POV.

I don't think they should be allowed back. This kind of behavior should not be allowed to be forgiven at any level.

I think that's pretty harsh, unless of course you have first-hand knowledge and are fully aware of both sides of the situation.

It is harsh. But guess what? So is the rest of the world on Greek life. Regardless of what actually happened, what the news stories report is what the PNMs and other non-Greeks see. If they're allowed to recolonize, DePauw is condoning their actions, and that's not right.

Do you have first-hand knowledge that what the papers reported was false?
