Brief excerpts from longer story:
OXFORD, Miss. — The University of Mississippi placed a fraternity on probation Wednesday after an inquiry determined alcohol was served the night a student from Texas died after falling out a tree.
. . . Beta Theta Pi was placed on probation through December 2008 . . . . The fraternity is also on social probation for the 2007-2008 academic year, meaning they cannot hold any on or off campus social events. . . .
The university said members of Beta Theta Pi violated the Ole Miss' policy by providing a common source of alcohol, distributing alcohol, lacking organizational control of alcohol and using chapter funds to purchase alcohol.
The university said the fraternity lied about the presence of alcohol at the chapter house and withheld information during the initial stages of the inquiry. . . .
